2K Games And Valve Steam Up
by Steve Gibson, Oct 24, 2006 11:01am PDTLooks like the digital distribution world is getting even a little more interesting. Not very long ago we saw Triton shut down and 3DR/2K announce they were shipping retail boxes to all Prey customers. Chris even got sassy and wrote an article about recent digital distribution fun. Well it didnt take long for 2K to hop aboard another digital train. Choo choo! 2K Games and Valve Software will now be working together:
October 24, 2006 -- 2K, a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO), and Valve today announced an agreement to bring a collection of 2K PC games to Steam®. "With titles from legendary designer Sid Meier and 2K's world renowned developer, Firaxis Games, 2K is one of today's foremost publishers," said Gabe Newell, co-founder and president of Valve. "Through this initial agreement with 2K, Steam's game library expands to include four great strategy games. We look forward to delivering more from 2K in the future." PC versions of Sid Meier's Civilization IV, Sid Meier's Civilization III, Shattered Union and Sid Meier's Pirates! will be available later this week via Steam. Activision, 2K, Psychonauts(!)...looks like this model is starting to loose the "new-fangled/experimental" perception and slowly becoming a more viable alternative to the brick and mortar.
Of course it did of seem sort of inevitable, but it's difficult for me not to see this as some kind of turning point for the industry...no? Maybe? Pshaw!?
Still, I'm gonna miss these kinds of releases:

Because that would RULE. Of course, I don't think any of the Civ games had keys, so that would be right out.

I mean our parents or at least mine still have records they purchased 30 years ago.
They have CD's they purchased when CD's were brand new - same with VHS tapes.
In 15 years, when you want to show your kid billy how cool that "amazing half life game was" - can you still "pull it off the shelf" ? Will steam be around in 15 years?
I have HL2 on steam sure but the above still does concern me a fair bit.

Prediction. Console games will cease to be distributed in retail stores within 15 years.
I see this as a trend, and something beneficial to the industry.

For instance, if all these games were available when Rag doll Kung Fu was initially released, would nearly as many people have bought it? Would anyone really have known about it if Valve had not drawn so much attention to that ONE particular product?

I think that will ultimately be very attractive to publishers, as they can put their entire library of games up and hopefully see a revival of sorts.
