by Maarten Goldstein, Oct 16, 2006 5:52am PDTAnother great week for new releases, although I don't think I'll be picking up anything. Maybe Sid Meier's Railroads!, but it'll be another 10 days before that's out here. Until then, I'll try to finish Company of Heroes. Movie: Conscience is a nuisance. A fly. A barking dog.

When you open the box, a big slip of paper falls out first, preceeding any discs or manuals. The slip of paper says, essentially, that 2142 includes monitoring software which runs while your computer is online, and records "anonymous" information like your IP address, surfing habits (probably via cookie scans), and other "computing habits" in order to report this information back to ad companies and ad servers, which generates in-game ads.
Now, I can live with certain in-game ads (though apparently there will be Dodge truck and Neon ads in the bleak, futuristic world of 2142), but including a lengthy description - outside of even the Eula - seems to indicate even EA knows that this is some shady borderline spyware shit. I don't support it and won't be buying 2142 (for a host of other reasons, too).

the following insert, included with boxed copies of the game:
The Software may incorporate technology developed by IGA Worldwide Inc. ("IGA") (the "Advertising Technology"). The purpose of the Advertising Technology is to deliver in-game advertisements to you when you use the Software while connected to the Internet. When you use the Software while connected to the Internet, the Advertising Technology may record your Internet Protocol Address and other anonymous information ("Advertising Data"). The Advertising Data is temporarily used by IGA to enable the presentation and measurement of in-game advertisements and other in-game objects which are uploaded temporarily to your personal computer or game console and changed during online game play. The Advertising Technology does not collect any personally identifiable information about you, and EA will not provide IGA with any of your personally identifiable information. The servers used by the Advertising Technology may, from time to time, be located outside your country of residence. If you are located within the European Union, the servers may be located outside the European Union. By installing and using the Software, you agree to: (i) the transfer of the Advertising Data to servers located outside your country of residence and, if applicable, outside the European Union; (ii) the collection and use of the Advertising Data as described in this Section; and (iii) the delivery of advertising and marketing content by the Advertising Technology. IF YOU DO NOT WANT IGA TO COLLECT, USE, STORE OR TRANSMIT THE DATA DESCRIBED IN THIS SECTION, DO NOT INSTALL OR PLAY THE SOFTWARE ON ANY PLATFORM THAT IS USED TO CONNECT TO THE INTERNET.
The legalese has led many gamers to wonder what exactly this technology will be tracking on their PCs. An EA spokesperson gave us the following comment:
The advertising program in Battlefield 2142 does not access any files which are not directly related to the game. It does not capture personal data such as cookies, account login detail, or surfing history. BF 2142 delivers ads by region. The advertising system uses a player's IP address to determine the region of the player, assisting to serve the appropriate ads by region and language.
For instance, a player in Paris might be presented with ads in French. The information collected will not be repurposed for other uses. Battlefield 2142 also tracks "impression data" related to in-game advertisements: location of a billboard in the game, brand advertised, duration of advertisement impression, etc. This information is used to
I ordered Stargate SG-1 Seasons 1 - 9 last night from Frys for $135 and got an email this morning saying my order got cancelled. Poop! Wish we had a Frys out here in central Oklahoma that I could just walk into and pick this crap up at :(

On Oct 24th the "silver" version of the PS2 comes out, and I was wondering if it was worth waiting for. (I decided not to fire sale my XBOX, to get an XBOX 360, and instead I am going to buy a PS2 so I can finally play games like "God Of War" and "Guitar Hero" and eventually "Bully").
I don't care about the look of it; in fact I would prefer black to silver.
But maybe the silver version has a better DVD drive, and/or it's another hardware revision?
No idea if any of that is true. Any thoughts?

If you use MS SQL as a database for a website, you need 1 user CAL for every user that might connect to that website. So if the website is an external website (non intranet) you are almost forced into buying per processor licenses. If it's an intranet site, you can realisticly buy a license for each user.
I think the above is true, please correct me if I'm wrong.
What I'm not entirely sure about is what exactly a user CAL provides you. This may sound really silly, but the definition of "user" seems to change quite a bit when even when discussing one MS product, SQL. I can't really find a definition of "user". Does user mean concurrent connection? Is user tied to a specific individual, and if that individual leaves the organization, do you have to replace the license?
Sorry for what's probably a stupid question. MS licensing seems to be intentionally confusing in some cases. :(

However, I find it hilarious that EvilDolemite's post remains +inf and shackers are still replying to it as if it's established fact. To recap, he summarizes a podcast at CGW:
that 2142 includes monitoring software which runs while your computer is online, and records "anonymous" information like your IP address, surfing habits (probably via cookie scans), and other "computing habits" in order to report this information back to ad companies and ad servers, which generates in-game ads.
And the Shack goes wild. This post is even linked directly at Digg.
All depiste the fact that he recants later in the thread:
Okay, I could have sworn in the podcast they mentioned browsing habits being monitored, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
Nobody bothered to read that part. Just like the news - accused of murder, front page. Acquitted, page 6.
I know that it's higly fashionable to bash EA, Dice, and The BF series - much of it justified as they certainly have their issue. But can't we at least wait to become an irrational angry mob over truthful, confirmed facts as opposed to recanted rumor?

I've read the first five Sandman comics, the first five Preacher, I've read The Watchmen and part of Jimmy Corrigan. I'm currently on the first issue of Alan Moore's Swamp Thing and I'm loving it so far. It's in my favorite genre, horror, and it's Alan Moore so the dialogue and story are top notch.
The books I've got sitting here waiting to be read are Transmetropolitan, V For Vendetta, 100 Bullets, The Spirit Archives Vol 1 and A Contract With God.
I've all the comics I've read so far The Watchmen is far and away the best. It's on a whole other level really. Next I'd have to say the best issues of Sandman really struck me. He's such a cool character and the whole Endless part of the story is unique from most anything else I've ever read.
I'm probably not going to order anything else for a couple of months until I get all these digested but feel free to give me some more recommendations.
Oh yeah and can anyone name any good books that are about "graphic novels"? I'm thinking of books about the formative years, the evolution of the art, things like that.

If all they are tracking is if the ad was actually rendered on screen then this isn't that big of a deal (atleast to me, ads are here to stay). If it's more than that then we absolutely need solid details on whats being tracked.
The ramifications go much farther than 2142 with this, we need less FUD more facts please.
