Marvel Universe Online Announcement
by Maarten Goldstein, Sep 27, 2006 11:26am PDTBack in 2004, Marvel sued NCSoft and Cryptic Studios, saying that City of Heroes was violating Marvel copyrights. Cryptic Studios' new game certainly won't do that, as they will be developing Marvel Universe Online, the MMORPG coming to Xbox 360 and Windows Vista.
"The vision behind the alliance of Microsoft Game Studios, Cryptic Studios and Marvel is to expand the MMO genre and create an epic gaming experience exclusively for Xbox 360 and Windows Vista gamers to experience together online," said Frank Pape, senior director of business development, Microsoft Game Studios. "Cryptic Studios is widely respected for their established track record of innovation and understanding of the MMO space, and they are a perfect fit for the creation of the best possible experience in 'Marvel Universe Online.'"What will this mean for City of Heroes/Villains? Not much according to NCSoft, who send along this letter from CoH lead designer Matt Miller.

Beside..Let's see.. SWG essentially failed.. Matrix essentially totally failed; two very high profile franchises, both "sure bets".. Marvel has some balls to try doing this project..
Not to draw conclusions, but I still have to be convinced by the viability and appeal of franchise based MMOs.
