Some more info about this free weekend:
    http://www.guildwars.com/support/gamecontents/nightfall/

Basically, this sounds more like a D2 or DS2 on the PvE side ... and some advances on the PvP.

    *****If you plan on playing:******
Download the client early and start downloading all the other stuff it downloads when you attempt to log on friday.

Thansk for the info. I continue to believe that I'd get more out of the game by learning more about how it works. I think I'll pick up a Nightfall Strategy Guide (hopefully it covers the previous two releases) unless you have a good suggestion for a site that seems to cover it well.

      Items of interest:
      - Crafting (I hate my Ranger armor)
      - Pointers, Tips, etc.

guildwarswiki.org and the guildwarsguru forums, in particular the Ventari's Sell Price Check forum, are all you'll ever need.

It's much more complex than either of those games. In D2 and DS2, you get to use all of the skills you've learned to kill the monsters.

In Guild Wars, you use only 8 skills during any one mission, so it becomes more of a mix-match to find the right set of skills to use.

I kinda liken it to Magic The Gathering (yes, I was a geek). You have a TON of cards to choose from, but if you want to make sure you get the highest advantage, you thin out your deck to pick and choose the right combo of cards that have the maximum effect, whichever effect that is.

yeah, I know ... but I am really trying to encourage people to try it this weekend and for many saying "This expansion is the most like D2 and/or DS2!!!!!" is the best selling point for them.

what makes you think this is like DS2 and D2?

It's *more* like DS2 and D2 compaired to the others, especally DS2.

You have heros/henchment/whatever that level up with you and you can customize with gear and pick the skills and such.

You can take you and your group into battles against others and their groups.

Basically it is not just you running around yourself & you can solo easier if you want ... two things closer to DS2 and D2 then the previous.

I like getting in and running a couple of random PvP missions in Guild Wars now and then. I enjoyed the PvE when I had a good number of friends playing.

Now I can't progress at all, because the henchman AI is terrible and inevitably aggros 3-5 groups of monsters and wipes the whole group. I don't know if the new Heros come combined with improved AI (or control), or if they're going to continue to Prince Rurik my ass everytime I take them on a mission.

GW (prophecies, at least) desparately needed better henchman AI, or else they needed to make every mission scale to the number of real players in your party.

I don't disagree with you & in all due respect, the article I originally posted answers at least some of the concerns you have: http://www.guildwars.com/support/gamecontents/nightfall/

No in case you can't look at that page due to being at work (or something) here is the paragraph on the Heroes:
            ***Quote***
NightfallTM brings more than a dozen Heroes to your aid as you battle against the forces of darkness. Each of these Heroes will gain experience at your side. You can even equip them with new weapons, upgrade their armor, and choose their skills for them. Best of all, you will be able to direct your Heroes in battle, telling them when, where, and whether to fight at all. You'll even be able to activate their skills for them. The amount of control is up to you. Use them like enhanced henchmen or direct them much like extra, full-fledged characters. The choice is yours.
            *** End Quote***

In the end, I really cannot tell you how good it is or not until this weekend. I plan on spending many hours playing it and hope that the stuff I unlock will continue when I get GW:N (I am sold on the Dev class and the heroes idea as long as it does not disappoint too much this weekend).
