Over at FileShack you can find a Company of Heroes singleplayer demo, allowing you to try out Relic's new WW2 strategy game before its September 14 release. The demo includes four tutorials, two campaign missions and one skirmish map. Thanks GameSpot.

  • I hate RTS games. All of them.

But this game is damn sweet. Of all the RTS games released in the last 10 years, Relic has finally made one that changes the genre. It just plain plays differently from all RTS games. No more rushing, no more crazy micromanagement, and no overcomplications. The game is fast enough to be fun, but slow enough so that you have time to really look at a situation and come up with a plan for beating it.

Also, the game is the first RTS to actually feel organized. Instead of just scattering units and base structures all over the place, you have a designated path you must follow to keep your supply lines working. Some people may think this limits the "strategy," but I think it's brilliant. Instead of putzing around with your base you can concentrate on the front line at all times. It makes the game more focused and balanced, because instead of winning by random chance and lucky base placement, you win because you matching your oppenent move for move. It's more like Chess and less like Battleship. Instead of guessing where your opponent is going to be and what he's going to build, you're intelligently positioning troops and timing your defense and attacks. Excellent!

And I haven't even played the single-player part yet, which I'm sure is just as great. Fantastic job, Relic, now keep this new genre you've created and build a new Warhammer game!!!
