Still, an improvement over the previous version.
The version of my "Central Industrial" map, formerly known as "Hammertime" in Q2 and Q3, that shipped with this Quake 4 patch was heavily modified from my original design.
I present to you, the original, unaltered version for your Q4 enjoyment: http://www.whatthehal.com/files/hal_centralindustrial_se.zip
It does not support Deadzone unfortunately. DM and tourney will work fine.

Deadzone seems pretty chaotic but it's been fun so far.
Had to run the exe through strings to find it. What an awesomely named cvar....
The movement is much faster. It feels even faster than Q3 to me now. The biggest thing for me is how quickly you can do a side to side dodging/strafing. It feels much more like previous quake games now.
The weapons have been tweaked a bit, but it's hard to digest all of that. Hitboxes seem to have been scaled down, or is that just because the side to side strafing speed is increased? Anyway it's harder to hit people which is good. Rockets seem a little faster although I could be imagining that. Napalm Launcher = nice new addition.
Sound has definitely been improved. In my brief time playing I didn't experience any dropped or stuck sounds like those that were so common before.
The new maps seem ok but I have to play more to figure out which are really good and bad. None of the ones I saw were all that visually stunning, but as far as layout goes they bring some different things to the table which is good. Now Quake 4 has A LOT of stock maps to pick from.
I couldn't find a server running Deadzone or the buy stuff yet so I can't say how that is, but overall I think people who didn't like Q4 before should give this a try as it is a lot better now. It definitely has a feel more in line with what longtime Quake players expect I think.

The movement feels like I actually have grip now, before it felt like i was falling all over myself. The weapon switch is perfect, no idea about the new gun, havent tried it. I'm not saying its perfect, but damn it feels like quake. Now we need RA4 to update.
