DailyTech has this story up with a table showing planned price cuts for AMD processors. As expected, these cuts are massive, with a $649 Athlon 64 X2-5000+ AM2 soon going for $282, a $522 Athlon 64 X2-4600+ AM2 going for $224 and many other top-of-the-line Athlon CPUs becoming close to or more than 50% cheaper as well.

  • Using these new prices and some benchmarks from the Anadtech conroe review, I made a little chart of your main >200 dollar CPU choices (lumped together with performance tiers).

    Tier 1
    Core Duo 2 X6800 - $999 (Quake 4: 160, BF 2: 130, HL2: 192, FEAR: 118)
    AMD - N/A

    Tier 2
    Core Duo 2 E6700 - $530 (Quake 4: 154, BF 2: 126, HL2: 189, FEAR: 111)
    AMD - N/A

    Tier 3
    Core Duo 2 E6600 - $316 (Quake 4: 150, BF2: 121, HL2: 184, FEAR: 108)
    Athlon 64 FX-62 - $799 (Quake 4: 144, BF2: 109, HL2: 170, FEAR: 101)

Tier 4 (Had to estimate the 6400 benches based on the 6300 and 6600 numbers)
    Core Duo 2 E6400 - $224 (Estimates - Quake 4: 130-145, BF2: 100-110, HL2: 160-170, FEAR: 95-100)
    Athlon 64 X2 5000+ - $282 (Quake 4: 139, BF2: 95, HL2: 158, FEAR 96)

    Tier 5
    Core Duo 2 E6300 - $183 (Quake 4: 124, BF2: 97, HL2: 154, FEAR: 92)
    Athlon 64 X2 4600+ - $224 (Quake 4: 129, BF2: 92, HL2: 151, FEAR 92)

Intel is pretty much the price/performance winner in every tier. Its probably a different story for the cheaper (sub $180) chips.
