- Independent developer Edge of Reality today announced its first original project since the studio's inception eight years ago, a military-themed action title featuring heroic protagonist John Cipher. "In Cipher Complex, a recon satellite is mysteriously blasted from orbit, and when diplomatic requests for information are stonewalled, the US government is forced to call in its last resort - Operative John Cipher," reads the announcement. "Charged with uncovering the truth by any means necessary, Cipher is going behind enemy lines to extract information the hard way." Company president Binu Philip promises "brand new styles of gameplay and methods of storytelling." The game is internally funded, and no information regarding a publisher was revealed. Previously, Edge of Reality has worked on titles such as Shark Tale (PS2, Xbox, GCN, also on GBA, PC), Pitfall: The Lost Expedition (PS2, Xbox, GCN, PC), and N64 ports of the first three Tony Hawk's Pro Skater games. This March, Midway cancelled the gang warfare-themed game Fear & Respect (PS3, X360), in development by Edge of Reality. Cipher Complex is in the works for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. No release date has yet been announced.

[ps3] [xbox360] - Classic game character Sonic The Hedgehog--who you may also know as "the blue dude with the 'tude"--celebrates his fifteenth birthday today, having starred in his first eponymous game for the SEGA Genesis on June 23, 1991. According to sega, over 44 million copies of over 30 different Sonic titles have been sold worldwide since the series' inception, which works out to over 8.000 Sonic games being sold every day. Gamers have sunk over 500 million hours playing Sonic and collected a mind-boggling 66 billion rings. In honor of the occasion (and possibly also in a fortuitous bit of marketing coinciding with the onset of the three next-gen consoles), there are several upcoming Sonic games in the pipeline. As far as what's been previously announced, Sonic The Hedgehog will be coming to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 later this year, Sonic Wild Fire will be coming to Wii in 2007, and racer Sonic Rivals will hit PSP this fall. Finally, another title was newly announced today. Sonic The Hedgehog Genesis, a light remake of the first Sonic game, will be released for Game Boy Advance this November at a $19.99 price point. The game will be nearly identical to the classic, with the addition of Sonic's later-added "Spin-Dash" maneuvre as well as an upgraded save system.

Some fans say that screws Blu-Ray for that model in the future. I don't remember the details, but Blu-Ray will require HDMI at some point, so newer movies won't play on the $499 model. Talk about a shitty deal, if true.
Also http://www.edge-online.co.uk/archives/2006/06/court_finds_ps2_1.php
Court finds the PS2 a console, not a computer. Sony gets slapped in the face.
I'm sure they'll see the PS3 the same way. Sony apparently tried to argue that users can create software for the PS2 and therefore it is a computer (not sure on this argument...Chris?) but the court said f.u. Also, Sony hates and fights homebrew apps tooth and nail. Hilarious irony there.

What I liked:
- I feel slight tingle in my brain when I go through a portal
- Dialog is well written
- Characters are well defined, more so than most FPS characters
- The artwork is visually cool and interesting to look at. I didn't get "bored" with my scenery at all
- The level design is mostly hallways and catwalks but the gravity shifting and spirit walking make up for it
- The bipedal enemies seem like they care for their lives by staying behind cover
- Subtitled dialog!!! YAY! First Doom3 engine game to have subtitles. They even do something kinda cool, the further away you are from dialog, the text fades out.
- The story follows the Hero's Journey structure to a T, which I like because I'm currently reading a book about writing using the same structure. So this game gives me great examples for the Herald and Mentor characters, etc.
What I wish was done better:
- Voice acting for the main character makes him sound like a whiney punk with certain lines of dialog. Other times he sounds completely fine, so the inconsistency is unfortunate.
- I'm really not a fan of the "interactivity" of turning on faucets and flushing toilets. It was fun back in 1996 with Duke Nukem 3D because that was the first time we could actually do those things. Now, even though we still don't see it that often, I feel like it doesn't add any lasting value to the fun factor.
- I think they could have done a better job of directing my attention to important events or objects the player was commenting on. Several times my character would comment on something and I didn't know what to focus on. I'm scanning the room but everything is so alien to me.
So overall, very impressed.

Great game as well, but it's the cuteness that will get you. The little blobs are so happy to be rolled around and bouncing into each other, and then they start singing along to the music and, if you've split them into lots of small blobs, chanting away. Then even more cute stuff happens as you meet other cute things in the game worlds...
It's like someone has squashed a kitten into a UMD.
You can download a demo from www.yourpsp.com (requires sign-up but it's worth it) if you're not sure.

I actually loved Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 for the Dreamcast even though they were criticized for their camera work and whatever else, but after those games, I haven't been interested in any of the others. It really seems like they're grasping for a new "gimmick" to make Sonic not seem like a rehash with every game, which is why we got "Sonic With A Gun" (or Shadow, what the fuck ever - as if there's a difference) and now racing type Sonic games. What will they think of next? "Sonic On A Plane" ?
