My Theory

This beta signup will serve as a guage to measure the interest in the game.

Later, they will announce that fans who contribute to the community through the forums and online fan sites will have higher priorty than those that signed up today..
Later, when the 5000-10000 closed beta testers have reached the end of their phase, the open beta will except limited amounts of people, who are paying members of one of the few big name game sites like filefront.

Later, when the beta is wide open, it will be limited to a handful of days, but preorders can get an extension and play in the beta longer.

Why sign up now?
