As a heavy armour / melee combat char I've been selling all my soul gems and other gems. Should I be keeping this shit? I dont even know what its usefull for.

  soul gems are used for enchanting swords and stuff at the arcane university if you join the mages guild. I think they can trap dying mobs souls too..not really sure what thats useful for though

    soul gems filled with the soul trap spell can recharge magic weapons.

  What about a Varla (Vara?) Stone. The manual says it can replenish charges to everything in your inventory at once. Do you still need to trap souls or can you just keep using it over and over?

    varla stones do recharge everything in your inventory, no need to trap souls, they work as-is, but they are one time use items.
