The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Chat Thread

by Maarten Goldstein, Apr 02, 2006 12:30pm PDT

I did come across some Goblins yesterday but they didn't have any lockpicks on them. Thankfully I found a dude who was selling them (thanks kbnerd) and was able to proceed with several quests. Pretty sure it's been a while since I spent over 37 hours on one game!

  • Skingrad House-Owning and slave whore servant hiring menz:

OK so after you deck out your house and hire the gal from the shop as your servant, wtf does she actually do? I was hoping I'd be able to dump off loot in the front hall and have her put the stuff away neatly or something, but all she seems to do is say g'day milord and wander about...?

Does she actually do anything? Cuz she was pretty quick to mention she "shared a bed" with the shopkeeper, but she doesn't seem to be down on a bootie-call either... Good help hard to find...

So after fiddling around with my computer trying to get Oblivion to run at an acceptable framerate http://www.shacknews.com/ja.zz?id=11882035, I finally got the bright idea "why don't I turn off vsync?".

    WHOA.

I always thought this wouldn't have an effect because the framerate would be below the refresh rate of the monitor. Whoops :(
It is now running like butter at 1280x960 with HDR. The distance sliders are at 75%, view and grass distance max, no shadows, and it's pushing around 50fps after everything "has loaded" outdoors. The best part is, it's smooth. It's actually quite enjoyable now :')

The only other tweaks I've used are iPreloadSizeLimit=104857600 (not sure what this does), and sound acceleration in dxdiag has been disabled (this fixed the AI "activation" tweak, in the post above, where if you're attacked outdoors your framerate will go to hell).
