John Romero's Going To Make You His Subscriber
by Maarten Goldstein, Jan 31, 2006 8:26am PSTComputer & Video Games reports that John Romero has resurfaced, as the designer is working on a new massively multiplayer game. Romero didn't reveal the title of the game or the name of the company, but did say this
"This is not a typical games company and we're not making typical games". According to Romero (who says he loves MMOs), the game he's working on is "very different from any other MMO for some special reasons." Precisely what those special reasons are, he wouldn't elaborate. He did, however, admit that funding for the project is lurking in the many millions of dollars bracket. "It's a lot of money, this is the most money I've ever spent on a game - in Gauntlet it was like $10 million, but this is much more," Romero revealed.According to the story we won't see anything from the game until next year.

I don't have the book handy, or I'd post the quote.
It doesn't seem very likely now since it's been a couple of years, but I'll throw that out there anyway.

As for Daikatana, I thought the "mplayer" deathmatch demo was awesome fun on that Gibbler On The Roof map.

One one side (Romeros), you'll play a rich, aging video game designer who fell from grace years ago. The other team (Ralucas) will play teenage girls in Romania. Both sides will attempt to determine if the other player claims to be who they say they are through late night IRC sessions and emailed fuzzy webcam shots.
The goal of the Romeros will be to to marry a trophy wife and import her so he can show her off on his webpage. The goal of the Ralucas will be to marry the richest American she can find on the Internet to obtain citizenship and eventually half his estate upon the inevitable divorce. Actual personality and chemistry are unimportant and can be feigned until the endgame content (The Church), when both players say "I do."

Yeah, Daikatana was definitely way below the standards of the typical games I've played.

HAAAAAAR. DAIKATANA, lol!!
It goes like this:
* In 9-12 months we'll see beautiful screens (which are only AA'd after Shackers point it out). There will be speculation as to whether they are in-game or not
* Developer diaries and weekly updates and interviews will start afterwards
* Hype builds as the official website opens, and much hoohah at GDC
and then ...
* The game, planned for 4Q 2007 gets pushed back
* Super incredible features, big selling points of the game, are dropped or simplified (while JR impresses us with why this is actually good for us)
* Game is delayed more, weekly updates stop happening. Dev goes into silent mode.
* Game comes out a buggy, me-too pos lost in a sea of other buggy, me-too pos's
Sound familiar?

W00T! Cant wait.
Romeros "finished" products are consistantly overhyped pieces substandard shite. TBH, he'd make more money writing "Romeros guide to Interviews and CV's" as his line in bullshit seems unstoppable.
