3DR Patches Very Old Games

12

For all you crazy Crystal Caves and Secret Agent fans, 3D Realms has released new patches to fix a system clock problem found on some systems running Windows XP. Crystal Caves was released back in 1991, and Secret Agent in 1992 so this has to be some kind of release day -> patch release record.

What was the point? To fix the games as stated. The titles still sell, and since we had the ability to fix it, why the hell not?

To be honest, this had zero impact on any other title. None of the DNF developers were even involved.

It was spearheaded by myself and Bryan Turner, one of the other techs here. We worked with Frank Maddin (the original programmer now at Microsoft) as well as one of the DOSBox guys.

I love the implication that anything we do is negatively impacting DNF. It just goes to show how little most people know about actual game development. :)

You guys should seriously hire some DOSbox people and have them work fulltime on that project. I would pay some serious cash for a 100% working DOS emulator.

I would also like to take this opportunity to applaud your work on these old titles. Nothing lights the nostalgia flame then a patch a golden oldie.

I don't think I was implying anything, hopefully it was just a general rebuttal and not necessarily directed towards me.

I realize that code fixes like this HAVE a reason, and I wondered what that reason was.

You answered it though, because they still sell. Simple enough.

As long as it's taking you guys to develop one title, I wonder how much you guys know about game development!

        Just kidding guys :)

It's because these games still sell truckloads in South Korea...

Seriously - this is a game company that DOES NOT WANT ITS OLD TITLES TO GET LOST. Think about how many games require herculean efforts to get running. Think of how many games just get lost. Think of how many games whose developers just get absorbed and purged (Origin) and just rust.

I know this comment I'm responding to wasn't critical of this effort, but some are. Whatever.
