As promised, a Vietcong 2 multiplayer demo is now available. The 445mb demo comes with CTF, DM and Team DM modes, and supports up to 64 players. Also available is the RPG-style system where both sides unlock new classes as they gain experience. Pterodon's first person shooter sequel is due out next month.

  • After Five hours straight of playing this demo I have some impressions of this botanic iron-site shooter.

Where your off spray because there's tons of Foliage. Lots of stuff to duck safely underneath. I only noticed a radar HUD once or twice, but wasn't sure if it was a admin changing settings or if I was accidentally hitting a radar button. There's a somewhat realistic sense of war as you have to determine who your enemy is by what they are wearing. This can be somewhat confusing at first, but after a while, you can even spot different classes of enemy soldiers.

You get to pick from 3 out of 8 or so classes available for the demo and there's a level up system that when you ding, a nostalgic arcade alarm cacophonies your senses and reminds you that there is reason in all of the pointlessness.

The map "Trail" is laid out surprisingly well. With all the greenery around, it makes the map seam larger than it really is. There's great camping areas as well as flanking routes. I find that the Vietcong has the advantage on this map as they are able to reach higher areas that provide more cover.

Besides the shoddy to non-existent physics or ragdoll effects, I don't have any complaints with these gameplay or graphics. I have a Radeon 9800XT, 2.4ghz P4 and 1 gig of ram. It runs incredibly smooth at 1280x1024 and nothing stands out as yuck. I only noticed one crash during my five hour rumble.

Heck, I'm actually thinking of buying this game.

  • Shacker Review (from somebody that actually played it for a few minutes)

Well, what can I say? It's pretty much what you would expect. The graphics aren't the prettiest (see the screenshots) but one benefit is that the game runs very smoothly. The whole engine has a pretty solid, professional feel to it, so I'll give them credit for using their tech well.

As far as the gameplay goes, there's nothing here that hasn't been done before. You choose which team you want to play on, choose a character class ala Battlefield (soldier, engineer, medic were the only ones unlocked), spawn in and run + shoot other doodz.

I couldn't even bring myself to play more than a few minutes, just because I couldn't stop thinking, "Why did they even bother making this? I might as well be playing Battlefield or Call of Duty or <Insert Generic FPS Here>." Seriously, where are the new ideas?!?! Where's my destructible terrain/buildings? Where are my story-based mission objectives? Where is my persistent world? Hell, if I wanted to play a bland CTF or Deathmatch game I already have dozens to choose from!

So there you have it. If you've played an FPS game in the past 7 years, you've pretty much already experienced everything that this one has to offer. It brings absolutely nothing new to the table, but it is at least well done for what it is.

Think of it like a new James Bond movie. Either you like it because it's Bond, or you hate it because you're tired of seeing the same old shit year after year. If you're burned out on FPS games, this isn't going to help you. If you still enjoy them, then you might like this one.

  • I'll give them some credit.

They do some stuff well. Crouching behind objects then simply holding right mouse will raise your gun up to aim, and it'll even raise you a bit above the object so you can get a shot off. No more just toggling crouch / stand.

Movement while aiming - aiming in this game actually has two points to it, like aiming a real gun. if you're moving while trying to aim your gun will swing around some, making it harder to aim. The site at the end of the barrel and the .. part near your eye aren't gonna be be even.

Negatives are the general buggyness of these guys' games. For some reason I can't join any of the servers that have the cheat protection enabled - it kicks me when I join, for cheating. I just installed it guys I'm not cheating YET, gosh.

When I can play I crash to desktop about once per 5 minutes, which is pretty stange for me. I can play wow for 4 hours and even dungeon keeper 2 for a few hours with no stability problems, but this apparently is too much.
