only thing i didnt like was the weak weapon sounds, couple of the machine guns sounded too mechanical and i couldnt tap the mouse to do single shot's
other thing that was weird, config'ing controls seemed to corrupt the cfg, and it was tricky getting stuff set right.
oh and the "CHNFLUGHCHSKN" sound that ragdolls made when walking into them would get annoying sometimes. (because i was on edge from the demo and it would freak me out each time)

TLDR version: A++
longer version:
the demo is short, but in the good way that leaves you wanting more. it's what Doom 3 should have been in a number of ways.
where to start... well, the first thing I'll say is that it's an excellent blend of scripted sequences with dynamic action. it's better-balanced in that regard than Doom 3 is. in Doom 3, things feel more open-ended but also a bit lifeless: after the opening bits of that game, a lot of it is just the usual run-and-gun followed by the occasional monster introduction or voice-over. in F.E.A.R., the game takes more control of the story but still gives you plenty of opportunities to take control. it's probably closer to HL2 in that respect.
also, the AI is much, much, much better than in Doom 3, and adds to the suspense that Monolith is trying to create. it WILL try and flank you. I had a battle in an open courtyard where I thought I was safe because I was hiding indoors. it turns out that the AI was so good that it climbed up some outside stairs, went inside, and then came downstairs and flanked me from an angle that I'd forgotten about. I also had an instance where they jumped over fallen shelving and came around that way.
the slow-mo effect is pretty swanky, and genuinely useful too. there's nothing quite like taking on multiple enemies knowing that you'll be fast enough to clean them all out.
graphically, the game is great but also demanding. letting it auto-detect gave me high CPU settings for a 3.2 GHz P4, but only medium detail settings on an X800 Pro. I was able to turn on volumetric lighting at medium without noticing any practical slowdown; that probably shows that Monolith is being cautious with its choices. the game looks very good with all those medium settings, too... so I imagine that someone with an X850 or 7800 GTX will probably squeal with glee when they play.
the only real problem is, as I said, that the demo is too short. I'm not so sure if I'd want it much longer though. it'd balloon the size of the download as well as potentially spoil some of the story. as it stands, it raises more questions than it answers: who is the girl? why do "they" all deserve to die? is there some connection between your super-soldier background and what you're investigating?

So...my review. Graphics were pretty good. Had a little bit more 'plastic' feel than I'd like, but it's better than other games in that regard. Other aspects of the graphics are on par with the latest round of engines. (Is this using LithTech? It seems much better than previous rounds of Lithtech.)
I don't like the weapons at all. I tried to use the MP5 lookin' thing and it seemed completely random...even zoomed, I'd point it at the baddies and the spray 'seemed' to only hit them 1 out of 10 shots. I'm sure you'd get used to the weapons..but they just weren't that cool.
The AI seemed good enough. I liked when they all yelled Flashlight!! when I was standing around the corner. I didn't pay much attention to the AI cause I was worrying too much about the stupid gun.
Voice acting was passable for the genre. The bald guy could have used a little more personality. (He reminded me of you guys.)
During the 'spooky' part, right after the vent closes, they must have done something right, cause I blasted the living daylights out of those two rats that came down the road.
Best part of the game/demo. You guys are going to love this. YOU CAN SEE YOUR FEET!!

But im not really a fan of that 'halo' weapons system. And the level design the demo is rather 1998. Simple box rooms.
I've always said that no matter how much people hate D3, no one can touch the art and level design of id....
also railgun is badass
I think I'll get back to it when I'm a little less jumpy :P.

If you want a good creepy game that isn't just a bunch of closet monsters like Doom 3 you need to play Silent Hill 2, 3, and 4, they are all on the PC now, they have great gfx and they are scary as hell, but NOT Doom 3 cheesy, just pure atmosphere.
A lot scarier than this demo thats for sure.

Likes:
I liked the AI it didn't just come looking for me blindly and they were taking cover and hoping over things - very cool.
The visual effects were amazing.
The freaky shit with the girl was great. I haven't been this freaked out playing a PC game in a while.
Dislikes:
I didn't like the ostriches, they seemed out of place.

I had it automatically configure the settings. I have an Athlon 3500, evga 6800gt, and 1gb ram.

But what's up with the controls? There's a button to crouch, a button to use your medkit, a button to throw a grenade, a button to aim, a button to use your flashlight...etc, etc, etc. I wasted a medkit a few times just trying to crouch.

Man, bravo Monolith. Bravo.
That MP beta had be worried, but those 15 minutes in that SP demo made me check my bank account to see if I could afford an upgrade in time for the full version.

And it's absolutely fucking awesome.
The weapons are very cool (wait until you nail someone with a shotgun up close, or use the railgun-ish thing), the environments are very well done, the AI seems pretty intelligent, and the game is fucking edge-of-your-seat insane.
The best part? About five real scares within this level alone. Not a "oh, that enemy appeared out of nowhere" scares, but rather: "it's already creepy, and then something happens and the music spikes and you want to scream like a little girl" kind of scares.
Only complaints I have: No 1280x1024, no option for single-fire on the rifle/SMG (only burst/automatic?), and the weapon sounds were a bit... quiet (kind of lower volume than the other effects).
Other than that, it looks like FEAR is going to absolutely deliver on the badass single-player experience the videos had led gamers to believe.
Here are some screenshots (which you obviously shouldn't look at if you don't want the demo ruined for you): http://polycat.net/gallery/fear

Holy creepiness on the double tag team scare of the little girl and the guy at the ladder part.
Loads of fun shooting bad guys and I must applaude Monolith on the AI. I must have played through the opening parts of it 10 times now and the only thing I saw repeating most of the times was one guy pushing a shelf unit down and then crawling under it.
Artist Gripe: Why is it that the modeling guys can't seem to remember to smooth the edge normals when they mirror the half of the heads? Always with the line down the middle of the head. Also.. the future is plasticcy and very shiny.
All in all a very positive experience and I will no doubt pick up the full version and only play it on sunshiney days with no sound and the lights on.
I played the demo on maxxed out graphics 1280x960 2xAA 8xAF, and it's the best looking computer game I have seen. No doubt it raises the bar above Doom3/Farcry. However I don't see why it has to run at ~30 FPS on a 7800gtx when Doom3 runs at over 100FPS on similar settings.
Overall, my anticipation level for this game has been raised from 'meh, I haven't really enjoyed a single player FPS game in years' to 'guaranteed buy'.
- decals are inconcistent, they seem to appear once every 5 shots, though this is reasonable considering the 'decals' actually deform the terran (correct me if its actually just really good bumpmapping). Also one of the decals for shooting a mere pistol produced a giant hole in the wall as if it was shot with a rifle.. not cool
-Whenever you walk over bodies and cause them to move, it sometimes creates a loud thump/collision sound as if they are being repeatedly pushed against a wall, kind of annoying.
-i hope the full game wont have levels that are as linear as the one in the demo
I will say that I miss the environment interactivity that you see in Half-Life 2 though. Also, the game has some nice creepy atmosphere, but I wouldn't say I was really scared either. I was probably more "scared" by those hard to kill mech looking guys then the scripted "scary parts." Overall, a great demo that is making me seriously consider picking it up.
And a skeletonizing rail gun? fucking GENIUS! I love it...

I dont know if I am a wuzz, but this game gave me the freaks. I know I wont be able to play it at night with lights out...
Great game, bad nightmares ;)
Little buggy (ie: game won't start if you disable joystick in the option menu)
But who cares, it's just a demo.
Random things i've noticed: the main character looks EXACTLY like a doom 3 character. I know they used the same engine and all... but you figure they would of changed the characters a bit more.
Slow-mo effects are really well done, it's basically Max Payne at a new level.
I like the fact that it was actually pretty challenging, or maybe it was just me learning how to use the slow-mo effectively.
Fun game, i just hope they don't go too 'crazy' and start throwing in random things like upside down levels that has stair cases that go to nowhere in a land where there is no ceiling or floor.
Anyhow, it was a GOOD demo! can't wait to see the full thing

I can't explain it. All I can say is every monolith game I've ever played suffers from it.. I feared the same for this (har har) and unfortunately, I was right.

rail + enemies => charred skeleton = awesomeness
the weapon switching was weird at first, until I realized it's Halo's setup, with 3 guns instead of two.
then it got interesting >:D

Boy, I forgot how ugly 640x480 was.
I think they're really going for that Halo style gameplay - lots of short bursts of action, with health being easy to find and easy to lose. It sort of seems like they built the controls for a console as well - is this a next gen title?

I don't know where to start, Monolith, I take my hat off to you. You have actually lived up to the dream in my head. THANK YOU NOLF GUYS. Faith restored. This thing oozes quality from start to finish.
This demo was honestly the most fun combat I have had in a FPS since fighting the marines in Half Life 1. The A.I. is fucking fantastic, I don't care if it's fake, it's fucking FUN to play against. Monolith? WTF? you actually remembered to make weapons that are fun to use? that actually make you feel like you're blowing the fucking shit out of someone instead of playing quasar? Why are you not falling in line with every other shitty FPS from the last 5 years?.
There's a really creepy ambience in the game, hairs were sticking up on the back of my neck and when it's not creepy, shit BLOWS THE FUCK UP and then motherfuckers jump through windows, knock shit over, and then shit blows the fuck up again with blood going everywhere. I can shoot a fucker with a shotgun, knocking him over and he gets up again, and then I can fucking nail him to a wall.
I don't know about you guys who are saying the weapon sound effects are too quiet, they are nice and loud on my shitty soundcard.
On top of all of this, your graphics are top notch. Your lighting and shadowing, water effects with fake caustics, amazing decals, it all feels extremely solid.
You did the unthinkable, you actually released a demo before you shipped so we can sample your game and decide if we want to buy it. If your intention was to impress you have suceeded, sold, where do I sign up, you've got my money, happily. Congratulations to everyone involved.
