EA Scores Another Sport Exclusive?
by Alec Matias, Jun 28, 2005 6:57am PDTWhen Electronic Arts launched its official website for NHL 06, two very curious words were right under the logo: Exclusive License. The website didn't offer any other details, but it appeared to be quite evident that EA had signed yet another exclusivity deal with a major sports league. However, not long after the site went live, EA changed the text to read "Official License."
"EA does not have an exclusive license with the NHL," head of EA corporate communications Tammy Schachter said. "It was a mistake." If EA were to pick up the NHL license, NHL2K pulishers 2K Sports would be a publisher affected by the shift. "This is not accurate information," said 2K Sports associate public relations manager Anthony Chau. Interestingly, however, the company directed us to the NHL for any further questions regarding the matter. So as of right now, the official word is "not true," but it's a rather peculiar goof to make. Speaking to GameSpot, the NHL confirmed it had an existing license with the EA, but did not offer any comment about an exclusive one.
