Late Night Consoling

Listen, I know that the possibility of another Shenmue makes all of your bottoms burble with glee, but please note, Microsoft signed a deal with a dev studio (Gargoyle Mechanics) that only employs people who worked on Shenmue. The IP still remains with SEGA and unless you hear something from them, Shenmue 3 ain't happening. In fact, SEGA already has another Shenmue in the works; it's a PC MMORPG for Asian territories. Read up on it here. So, while GM may make a game similar to Shenmue, a full-blown sequel isn't happening (yet..), no matter what another website tells you. Fun Fact: Shenmue was originally in development on the Saturn. Of course, it was in development late in the Saturn's lifetime so SEGA did the smart thing and moved it to Dreamcast.
  • HD-DVD in the Xbox 360?

    [xbox]

This story begins with Toshiba and Microsoft announcing a joint partnership in bringing HD-DVD to the masses. Obviously Microsoft would love to see this format win the next-gen format war as Sony is primarily responsible for Blu-Ray, the other dominant format. As part of the announcement, Bill Gates teased gamers about HD-DVD and the Xbox 360. "The initial shipments of Xbox 360 will be based on today's DVD format," Gates confirmed. "We are looking at whether future versions of Xbox 360 will incorporate an additional capability of an HD DVD player or something else."

  • MTV Ads in Midway's Games

    [ps2] [xbox] [gamecube]

Another partnership was formed today, this time with MTV Networks and Midway Games. Their deal will have MTV supply music for game soundtracks in exchange of in-game advertising. This begins with L.A. Rush for the PS2 and Xbox and will also be part of two other unannounced games. So in L.A. Rush, you'll hear music from artists like Lil' Kim and Big Boi as well as some form of content from "Pimp My Ride."

  • Microsoft Taps ex-Shenmue Team

    [xbox]

Microsoft is trying their damnedest to make a splash in the Japanese market and their latest move was signing Gargoyle Mechanics to develop games for their Xbox 360. Gargoyle Mechanics is comprised partly of team members responsible for the Shenmue series, prompting many sites to start the rumor mongering of a Shenmue 3.

  • Sony Wins First Battle Over PSP Importers

    [psp]

If you recall back on Friday, it was revealed that Sony is looking to shut down the sales of imported PSPs in the European territory. They won their first victory today by getting their request for an immediate injunction approved. As of right now, stores are not allowed to sell imported PSPs. In fact, if a consumer tries to return a faulty unit, he'll have to wait until after September 1 for a replacement. A hearing is set for July 18.

  • MTV Getting into the Games Business

MTV announced their newest department, MTV Games, which is dedicated to "developing, producing and promoting unique and creative gaming experiences that resonate with MTV's audience." Their PR says they're looking to create original game franchises by working with independent developers and they are looking to forge relationships with other publishers, as evidenced above with Midway Games.

  • UMD Format Now a Worldwide Standard

    [psp]

The UMD format is gaining steam; first it was announced that 100,000 UMD movies have been sold and now Ecma International, an association that standardizes media formats, approved the UMD as an industry standard. Hopefully we'll now begin to see some new uses of the format, such as the promised music UMDs.
