Late Night Consoling

A couple days age, we linked to this interview with LucasArt's president, Jim Ward, who spoke to Boomtown mainly about his thoughts on the role of the story in a videogame. Basically, he feels that games today lack stories and are too focused on "button management." He says that although he loved playing GTA: SA and Half-Life 2, the stories just weren't there. He feels that the industry needs to "figure out ways in which to make the story compelling in terms of humour and suspense." What he said next struck a particular chord with me. "And then on the character side, tell me the last character you played that you fell in love with. That happens very rarely, right?" He's absolutely right and something needs to be done about it. For me, there have been just a few games where I've become so absorbed into the game's universe and characters that I was actually a bit depressed when it was all over; two being Final Fantasy X and Knights of the Old Republic. In KOTOR, I played through it first as a light Jedi. When I tried it again as a dark character, I found myself actually cringing at moments when I was abusing my party members. When I eventually had to kill one off, I had to talk myself into doing it. To Jim Ward, consistently achieving these kinds of emotions with a player is the Holy Grail of gaming. This is something I definitely feel is lacking in games today and I'm glad there are people out there trying to fix it.

A beta test will launch not long after the system is released. At the same time, Final Fantasy X producer Yoshinori Kitase hinted that he was working on the upcoming PS3 Final Fantasy.
