Late Night Consoling
by Alec Matias, May 12, 2005 8:00pm PDTOkay, my quick-hit reaction: glad there's only one version, happy for the included hard drive, and kudos on the semi-free Xbox Live Silver. Boo-urns to paying for a WiFi adapter and battery controllers. All this news today has basically focused on the hardware, which is fine, but as they always say, it's all about the games, and that's what E3 will be for. There was a rumor floating around form respectable organizations that some devs immediately switched from Xbox 360 to PS3 after seeing Sony's hardware in action. Will the huge amount of hardware features win out over pure technological prowess?
- Your first order of business is to read this if you haven't yet. Many sites have updated with their large overviews of the console. Here they are: Game Informer, TeamXbox, GameSpot, and IGN. Quite a bit of reading, so enjoy! Also, this video surfaced today with overly-excited Xbox 360 engineers discussing the hardware. Trust me, this six minute clip is twenty times more informative than the MTV show.
More on Xbox 360
[xbox] - It's a possibility according to Sony's chief financial officer Takao Yuhara. Speaking to a Japanese news service, he said, "For the year end sales season, simultaneously building up both the PlayStation Portable system in America and Europe as well as the next generation PlayStation is one option that we have." A plausible scenario or some early smoke-blowing prior to the announcement of the Xbox 360?
PS3 This Year?
[ps2] - Capcom revealed their newest game, Devil Kings, for the PS2. You will control different heroes from warring nations, each of which has special and unique abilities, with the goal to eventually unify the country. Experience points play a big role as each character is upgradable. More will be seen at E3. Screenshots inside the link.
Capcom's Latest: Devil Kings
[ps2] - The first screenshot of Q Entertainment's Xbox 360 has been discovered. Information is very scarce, but it'll be called Ninety-Nine Nights and judging from the screenshot, looks like large armies will play a significant role. Hopefully more will be revealed soon.
Q Entertainment's Xbox 360 Title
- A boatload of screenshots for Dead or Alive 4 have surfaced and it has been supposedly confirmed that it will be an Xbox 360 game. The game shows plenty of returning characters and some new ones, but Tecmo has said these are unofficial shots. An official announcement at E3 is expected.
Dead or Alive 4 for Xbox 360
- Microsoft released today new premium downloadable content for MechAssault 2: Lone Wolf. For $4.99, Xbox Live subscribers can purchase six new maps (each supporting up to 12 players) and the new Goblin armored vehicle.
New MechAssault 2 Content
[xbox] - Square Enix revealed that their animated film project, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, will receive a simultaneous release in both the US and Japan on September 14th of this year. As for the US launch, it appears it will only be available on DVD. Hopefully E3 will provide clarity.
FF7: Advent Children Dated
[psp] - IGN has a video interview with Silicon Knight's president, Denis Dyack, even discussing their split with Nintendo.

Nice video.
I can't believe that I'm actually excited about the release of a console. I guess thank god for HDTV making console games look about as good as PC games.

It's just well..nothing.
Actually. It has SOMETHING. It has the power to run 63 bots simultaniously for PDZ. That's a whole lot of wicked stuff to me personally, but it's going to flop horribly, I suspect.

Seeing as the xbox360's controllers are wireless... Will it be possable to have more than 4 players play on the thing at the same time. I mean sports games could benefit greatly from that. Think about it having 10 ppl around a huge tv playing nhl2008 or somehting.... that would be soo sweet

After that's done someone does the motherboard routing, someone does the CPU/GPU cooling, someone does the system thermal modeling (often pissing off IE with required changes), someone does the DFM (design for manufacturing) for the enclosure, including plastic molding, sheetmetal (EMI) design, die casting if applicable, hardware engineers do the integration, manufacturing engineers set up lines, someone manufactures it.
Make no mistake, Microsoft does very little hardware design. They doe the easy part: write checks and design specs.
On the first Xbox Intel did the CPU/GPU cooling, system cooling, and board layout for MS. Flextronics manufactured fabbed the PCB and did the system integration. I can't remember who did the ID, but I remember the first Pro/E CAD drop I opened after I FTP'd. Lots of un-named people worked on Xbox the actual Xbox mechanical, electrical, and thermal design. None of them were wearing MS badges.

Nintendo, struggling to shed an image that its technologies mostly appeal to children, is preparing to deliver a game console that is radically different from the cute and cuddly GameCube.
Perrin Kaplan, Nintendo's vice president for corporate affairs, said GameCube's successor would be "very, very sleek." She described it as horizontal and no taller than a stack of three DVD cases.
Unlike GameCube, the new system will play DVD's, Ms. Kaplin said, and will feature a wireless controller. It will play GameCube games as well as a new class of high-definition games, with new emphasis on online play.

If they did though I don't like the idea of Nintendo (being "revolutionary") launching last. That probably wouldn't be good.

Not to say the PS2 wasn't a good console (I do own one), but why people have this faith in Sony after all their emotion engine crap, I have no idea.

Perfect dark looks like ass so far. Gears of war looks phenomonal, ghost recon looks next gen and we got a pre-rendered video for pgr 3. I'll save judgement for when we get some in-game videos at e3, but they better up the ante, the current demonstrations are not excactly WOW worthy.

The other small clips of games I saw that looked really good were: NFS Most Wanted and The Darkness. That Tony Hawk game's premise sounds really cool, but the graphics didn't look like much of an improvement.
Also, with rumors of Halo 3 coming out in 2005... how is that possible?! Bungie must be working overtime.
