Prey Announcement
by Maarten Goldstein, Apr 26, 2005 7:16am PDT2K Games sends along a press release officially announcing the return of Prey. As we previously reported the game is in development at Human Head Studios, and powered by the DOOM 3 engine. The press release offers no details on the game, you'll have to check out the June issue of PC Gamer (link goes to cover showing an in-game screenshot) to find out more. A release year is mentioned in the announcement though: 2006. Prey will ship on PC and "a next-generation console system".
"The initial concept for Prey had been incubating for a while, waiting for the right opportunity to come along," said George Broussard, President of 3D Realms. "We jumped at the chance to create this game with a talented developer like Human Head Studios and next-generation technology like the Doom 3 engine." Scott Miller, CEO of 3D Realms, added, "Prey is special for many reasons, including several new and original gameplay features and a tightly integrated story that packs an emotional punch, unlike other first person shooters." "Our collaboration with 3D Realms has been enormously rewarding," added Timothy Gerritsen, CEO of Human Head Studios. With their help, Prey is sure to breathe new life into the first person shooter genre with a compelling story, innovative gameplay mechanics and dazzling imagery, which is powered by our significantly enhanced version of id Software's original Doom 3 engine."

just kidding,.. but seriously.. Does it look like a doom3 ripoff or is it just me?
God that makes me want to hurl even now.
The only reason they're going with the name "Prey" is to inherit the hype.

Companies like 3DR have a lot of real experience to pass on and actually assist with (everything from game mechanics to art and code). A publisher doesn't really have much to offer in those fields (at least not the art directors and tech directors I've seen).
If Bioware would take one more step toward this path, imagine getting new and cool RPG's through Bioware like that? If only Blizzard was independant and could pull this off, as well.

Not that I mind, but I wasn't expecting something like that. Or is it just marketing mumbo jumbo?
Won't they risk turning off the straight 3d shooter people?
