Truce to be Called in Blu-ray/HD-DVD Format War?

A few weeks ago, Sony president Ryoji Chubachi publicly stated that he hoped to work with the backers of HD-DVD (NEC, Toshiba) to find a compromise and merge the two competing standards for the next-gen DVD format. While it was first thought talks had broken down, it appears both sides are communicating and it could be another two months before a deal is reached. Another possible scenario is to require players to be capable of handling both HD-DVD and Blu-ray discs instead of requiring two separate players. A handy comparison of the two formats can be found here. On a technical standpoint, Blu-ray appears superior, but HD-DVD has an advantage in that their discs can be produced using existing manufacturing processes whereas Blu-ray requires new equipment. Sony has already announced it'll use Blu-ray in the PS3 and its upcoming Vaio laptops, but if a new standard is created, we could see delays. Movie studios, however, have been split.

  • I was under the belief that hd-dvd was just a regular dvd-9 containing wmv compressed video to get the higher res.. why would anyone favour that over a new disk that actually has a far larger storage capacity aside from the fact that they can still use the old pressing plants? it's a cludge, it's better to go with something that's specificly designed for the intended purpose from the start. also with hd-dvd the new players are going to be an assload more expensive because something compressed that heavily is going to need processors that are an assload faster to decompress it, the dirt-cheapness of the entry level players was one of the things that I'm sure helped dvd immensly (of course this could be the same with blue-ray, but if the disk can hold the reported ~50gb per layer or whatever it was then I wouldn't have thought so). just the data-storage aspect alone has to make blu-ray the winnar. hopefully the ps3 being blu-ray will put the foot in the door, although hd-dvd disks are a reality right now (allbeit in a bit of a novelty way like the t2 one) whereas blu has yet to be seen at all
