Prey to be Re-Revealed at E3
by Alec Matias, Apr 05, 2005 10:18am PDTCNN/Money's Chris Morris posted an E3 preview article in which he mentioned that the oft-delayed and eventually canceled Prey will resurface at this year's expo. 3D Realms were the original developers behind the game but it's now rumored that Human Head has been handling Prey, which is now being built using the DOOM 3 engine. Take-Two Interactive would likely publish the title. Prey has been around for quite some time, having a showing back in 1997. The plot centered around a Native American who fought against invading alien forces, but Morris could not confirm if the story is the same, vaguely similar, or vastly different. One fan took the time to create a timeline of the game. We'll know soon as E3 is barely over a month away.

Any of you old school gamers remember a game called "Bioforge?"
The concept of this game was a half-human, half-cyborg experiment
gone wrong wakes up on a deserted alien base.
The game was a fixed point 3rd person perspective game with 3D models that walk through and solve puzzles. The new concept of Prey kinda sounds like a 1st person version of Bioforge; although I'd love to see a Bioforge remake also.

I'm not sure when this was taken, actually, but it's an interview with Infinite mHz, and there's quite a bit shown from the game. It looks to be pretty late into development.
Go Prey!

Next thing you hear - they'll be fucking making Prax War again!
And honestly, news of the Doom 3 engine does nothing for me. The engine was great for Doom 3, but unless the game is going to be mostly black with binary shadows all over the place and plasticy looking stuff everywhere, which is not what the early screenshots for Prey looked like, then I don't think this is a good choice for an engine.
The screens I saw actually looked more like precursors to the Unreal 1 tech. But hopefully some media will be available at E3 and everyone can make more informed judgements then.

First off Talon Brave needs to be a total badass. Someone unfuckwithable. I am picturing hatches being thrown through the air and plunging into alien scum's foreheads. Ledge-dropping ambushes and throat slitting. And other shit.
No conventional weaponry. Bows 'n shit but amped up x100 like Ninja Gaiden or something. Insanity.

If so and they aren't developing it, why pony up for the Doom 3 engine? - Surely the Duke engine which has been "constantly upgraded" to decent tech levels should be able to do the job?
I find that a little weird personally.
- Pentium 166 Processor or greater
- 32MB RAM
- Supported 3D Card
- 28.8 Modem for TCP/IP Games
I'd really hate to have to upgrade my system memory to 64 MB to support this game.

The universe / storyline it's set in was never truely developed (obviously, since it never came out) - it wasn't based on anything else to my knowledge either.
Sure they said a few basic things but it sounded like standard developer comments on their plans, no huge grand visions.
It's not like the comments Romero made about Quake after Doom 2 was completed - he was taking interview after interview, speculating about a god like character with a hammer and hell alsorts of things he claimed which made our imaginations run wild.
I've always noticed ever since it was cancelled that people nostalgically reminiss (sp?) about the game as if it was something huge - but at that time if my memory serves me, the fps genre was really booming and it was just one of many many upcoming games of the time.
It's never been a doom or a duke or quake / halo / resident evil sized thing to me - just some basic game in it's infant stages of storyline development so nothing to truely get excited about
(shrug)
I still remain confused on this one.

I know like one or two of you remembered that I had this up, but maybe some others would still be interested in these classic screenshots. Going to try to upload the rest of my videos, too....
Turok??
#1
There you are, playing DM, fragging like crazy, you're 1st in the scores table, you see a portal (like the ones in Quake series?), you jump into it, err VOILA you're in a completely different server, now what, what happens to your score now that you're fighting completely different dudes?!
It's not like your building up your character in a MMPORG, so.. What's the point of jumping thru servers, really?
#2
The other way i see it is.. all the servers of the world, all connected to each other. All playing one HUGE MAP, maybe composed by a lot of different scenarios (for the purpose of diversity), each represented by a different server?
There is one main registry of all the scores, updated on the second and available on the world wide interweb (like the one used by the first UT?). Then there are secondary score tables, maintaned by/for each server.
Would this make any sense?
#3
Finally, a variaton of #2, where different servers, distant from each other, are connected AND really play ONE unique map.
Players connect to the server of their choice (better ping, etc) and play away.
This would probably require servers on huge bandwidth pipes (tailpipe pic comes to mind) to connect different parts of the world. But maybe at a country-level the idea wouldnt be that bad.
This would also be a coder's nightmare, right? :D

If I remember correctly, wasn't one of Prey's main seeling points that everything was going to be destructible, including level geometry (ala Red Faction)??? It would be hella tight if they could get that to work really well with Havoc physics and all.
Also, please let this mean that DNF is close...

Freaking great... the big thing that prey was suposed to do was only 1-2 monsters per level and the AI was going to be so good that it took 30 minutes to kill each one. or some shit. not sure how fun it would be, but I like the idea.. if that's still the idea.
