I imagine most of you enjoyed your weekend? Just make sure to clean up when you're done and use some air freshener or something.

• Anyone know much about AI in games? I'm messing around trying to write a techdemo basically (it'll likely never get as far as a game). It's an rts kinda thing. So lots of guys running around doing things.

One of the problems I'm forseeing is entity interactions. I can have a max distance function on them obviously and compare the sum of the squared differences (instead of taking sqrt's) as well as precompare based on square bounding boxes (so a few subtracts and compares rather than multiplication). So like nested for loops running through and comparing each entity to each other. This means I'd need to do a high order of compares. Yay for n^2 stuff.

One idea I have is to have each entity store its distance to a specific point far away. Then sort the list by this distance. Sorting is slow, BUT it is semi-frame coherent meaning subsequent sorts would be much faster. This way each entity must only look up and down the list from its own position until the delta(distance from the far point) is larger than the entities "sight" distance. It would limit the number of compares to entities inside of a big double arch through the sector.

If anyone knows of any good sites or links or would be willing to chat with me from time to time on this and related subjects I would be very greatful.

• Tomorrow it will start to snow. 16mm per hour. Each day. 24 hours a day. For 9 days. I have to park my car outside and remove the snow on my own (no snow mower or whatever you call them). I'm so sad :-(.

• Is burning iTunes downloads to cd then ripping them to mp3 still the only solution to turning iTunes format songs to mp3?

Help!

• WoW Woes

So we went out this weekend with the vain hope of finding a copy for a good friend of ours. The result: Denied

• Going to try and catch up on TV viewing.

Alias, 24, Desperate Housewives, House MD, ... ? What else? I tried Deadwood for a few episodes. Don't think I'd like Sopranos from what I've seen.

What's on DVD, and what's currently going on? (/me goes to tvtome.com)

• Hi all!

Is there anyone who would do some cybersquatting for me? blaklarder.net just got available, and If anyone of you suckers would want to register that I'd love that.

The reason is that my GF works with domain name registrations, and she lost Blaklader (a swedish company making work clothes) for some other company a while back. And since that other company is full of retards they forgot to renew blaklader.net, and it became available today. So I want to help my GF to show how much the other company suck by registering that domain. But since that could possibly (probably) be unethical and I don't want her to lose her job I thought maybe one of you could do it for me?

• Evening Workout tally:

Workouts to Date: 35
Workouts Remaining: 235

explanation: http://www.shacknews.com/ja.zz?id=8598618

45 minutes on the elliptical tonight after dinner. Yay for progress. I watched some of Battlestar Galactica on Sci-Fi channel, but since this was the first time I'd watched any of it, I don't really know what's going on. I don't even know if I was watching the miniseries or one of the episodes. It looked pretty good though.

Dammit, now I have to find a way to watch this show from the beginning. Maybe my sister taped it. I think her TV is stuck on the Sci-Fi channel, so there's a good chance she's been following the series.

• Dear KOTOR 2,

Please forgive me. I have slandered your good name with musings of the less-than-confident variety. I have questioned your veracity in comparison to your father, the beloved KOTOR. Forget all that! I just encountered the Jedi Stronghold and had a conversation with a character that literally annoyed me. An emotional reaction! From a videogame! That is rare indeed, and for that, I salute you. I really wanted to tell that Jedi bitch with the white hair off; she's so stuck in the world of Jedi protocol that she can't see right from wrong.

And Kreia is now manipulating Atton, though I suspect Atton is not as "guilty" as she would have you believe. The story is really picking up, so I hereby officially apologize, KOTOR 2. You know how I get...baby, I love you, I do, shhhh, no tears...

• Car Doods:

Any idea what might make a car not start post fender bender? My wife got into one on Friday, the front right side of the car, minor damage. She drove it home. Went out to start it this morning and it turns over fine but does not ignite. So it's probably not the battery or altenator. Only things I can think of that would cause it to turn over like it is but not ignite is spark plugs, thrown timing belt, or faulty starter - which don't seem to be accident related. Ideas?

• Silent Hill (one; 1; the first one; playstation)- Complete Playthrough

Have you been wanting to play through Silent Hill but
b) Got frustrated with the controls?
c) Can't find it?
d) Don't have a playstation?

Well then this ShackTorrent is for you!
What is it? It's a complete playthrough of Silent Hill. Not a speed run, but a normal playthrough with some of the more tedious item hunting cut out and some of the longer wandering segments snipped out. All of the cinemas and voices are left intact and it flows pretty much like a horror movie (a very confusing horror movie)

• I have a mysterious item on my desktop after rebooting that windows says is waiting to be burnrd to cd. How do I see the file extension? Googling the name reveals nothing. Its a 56k file called Tinker2. Any clues where it caame from?

• My 2005fpw arrived today, heres a quick review.

I was disappointed to see it was a November, A00. (assembled in the UK)

I had one dead pixel and two stuck green pixels. The dead pixel was really annoying on a while background but just touching it fixed it. The two green pixels are not noticeable unless I switch to a black screen and look hard for them.

There is some backlight leakage but its only noticeable with a black background and even then, barely so.

The blacks are not completely black, I expected this and it doesnt bother me.

I played Half life 2 at 1680x1050, it worked ok except the HUD was fucked up, bits were missing.

I played the painkiller demo and it ran at 2 fps, this is not down to my card as it has more than enough fillrate to give me more fps than that. Its either a NVidia driver bug or a bug with painkiller.

Overall I am fairly happy, the faults arent really noticeable. In fact if I hadnt read all the reviews and learnt how to look for the faults I may have never noticed the green pixels or the backlight issue. My biggest worry is gaming compatibility. I've only tried two games and neither work 100%.

btw I found some half decent free widescreen wallpapers
