The Ensemble Studios website has been updated with new teaser text, as we're getting closer to an announcement from the Age of Empires developer. Previously just saying "The Wait is Almost Over", the new line "2300 BC - Sargon 1 unifies Sumeria" seeminly indicates Age of Empires 3 will span several ages. Thanks badman.

From the hinted timeline, I can presume we can expect some civilizations along the lines of: Akkadians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Sumerians, and the Persians from Ancient Mesopotamia. (http://www.dot-totally.co.uk/archives/2004/12/08/aoe3-timeline/)
