Evening Reading
by Steve Gibson, Oct 07, 2004 6:04pm PDTWell from my end I gotta say I was the CS:Source release went pretty well. As expected the games list did hork out a little bit with some fun SQL errors for a little while but not for very long at all. Also, CS: Source is purrrrty. Yay for no more dust!

What game do you miss the most?
I don't mean a game you can go to the store or E-Bay and start playing again, I mean what game will you never be able to play again, but you had a lot of fun when you were able to play it? Damn this ended up long, I'll put in reply.

In CS:S how do I supply a password in the console connect command? It just gives me "bad password" without a chance to input it.
Sorry if this has been asked before.

I heard on the radio today, BB was taking used DVD's in as at *least* $8 per DVD. I called and verified first, and they said yes, all region 1 original DVD's in case will earn an $8 credit minimum. The wife and I took 11 DVD's we'd never watch again and got an $88 credit in no time. Took the credit to GameRush, got Burnout 3, and still have $30 or so left on the card.
Anyone want to play!?

Would it have been better if we/you/etc had quit the game after reaching the Richenbacher (sp)? From that point on for me, it felt like an "on-rails" standard "meh" shooter, completely different from the rest of the game :(

We get to have a "blame game" meeting about the problems with the application move last night. I swear if anyone gets pinned because of the issues we had I might just come across the table and stomp some heads.
That being said, how can I learn to sleep with my eyes open?

Now I have a size D, and they are annoying when you want to exercise, especially when you need to find sports bras. But boys like them.
I would like to "firm" them if I can and try to lose some of the fat from them. Is that possible? I know boobs are fat...so there has to be a way...come on shape girls...I know you have the answer. Thanks !

when i stuck my head out of the bus stop cover, or tried to run and hide behind another protective obsticle, the laser would track me and try to kill me, burning for a few minutes before shutting down and going back to standby. at one point i was inside the bus stop think while the laser was melting the glass, right where i was. i could see the flow of liquid plexiglass as the structure got weaker in that spot.

Basically text a message to GOOGL (46645) with a basic query, like "pizza 10013" and recieve a list of repsponses for pizza shops in that area. you can also search for business and personal listings, definitions, etc.
I can really see this being usefull. Often I'm on the road and need a phone number or just want to see if a store exists in the area I'm in, and don't want to call 411. I just tested it and it works great!

Every so often, I will go into a non chatty thread. To those of you who have the latest chatty set as your start page, I don't recommend this. It can be a scary, dangerous world out there. Anyways, I thought I came up with a pretty good idea.
If you are too lazy to click ... We need a standard in benchmarks. Futuremark could easily become just that. Developers of games like Sims2 are going to spend more time adding textures and alien babies then they are thinking of benchmarking tools. Some games spent more time on net code then the multiplayer game menus. So, they went with the (albeit nasty) Gamespy arcade. Damn near every game I install asks me for Gamespy arcade. I say no of course and use ASE, but it is built in with these games.
So why does Futuremark not do the same thing? This is actually GOOD for gamers. Carmack could say "you need 43 Doom3 3dmarks to play this game like I want you to play this game." Those 43 marks can be put together not only on frames per second, but engine specific fill rate tests, and so much more. You could see this on damn near every game, including ones like Sims2! This way if Sims2 is your big game, it is easy for a reviewer to say "the different between an ATI 9800 and an Nvidia 6800 was 20 Sims2 3dmarks!" Now you have what could be a fair metric that actually relates back to real game play!
(For those of you that tune into my posts for jibberish or flim flam, I will try to resume my normal schedule of shenaningans tomorrow)

With Episodes IV - VI, it was truly the dawn of special effects. No movie before A New Hope had graphics and sound anywhere close to even its opening scene alone. Lucas introdced techniques that are still in use today. The costumes, sets, and vehicle miniatures were incredibly detailed. The original trilogy really pushed Hollywood into new realms. Films like Alien, The Terminator, and other 80's sci-fi blockbusters borrowed liberally from the trilogy.
With the current trilogy, Lucasarts has utilized CGI to its fullest. Say what you will about the acting, script, or plot, but Episodes 1 and 2 have some of the lushest, most believable special effects ever seen in a movie. These two (and soon to be three) films are pushing what can be done with a bluescreen. Even current movies like Return of the King and Terminator 3 can't match the computer-generated trickery created for the climactic battle scene in Episode 2.
So, if Lucas ever completes his nine-part story, what ground do you think the next series will break? Will the movie be in true-3d, with viewers donning lightweight, breathable helmets that allows them to be "in" the movie? Will there be holographic theaters, where your position is equivalent to the camera's view, and objects zoom by realistically? What's the next jump for special effects in 20, 25 years?
