So, I did not enjoy the demo in itself, but rather in its promise. The main problem is that you're just thrown into a battle with a ton of troops you're seeing for the first time, that you didn't create and whose strengths you don't know intimately. When you play the campaign, YOU decide which troops you're gonna build, based on what tactics you want to use in battles. This is what makes these games so amazing, the perfect blend of turn-based strategy and battlefield rts.

If I press escape I get a flash of an options menu, but otherwise I'm left with a shot of Romans and the background music.
What am I doing wrong?
Allan.
Thinking this was odd, I did the same thing on the hard difficulty. Pretty much the same except that more of my men died, and it took a little longer, but it was still pretty easy to win.
Like I said, I'm not sure I get it. Maybe I am missing something.

Sound is good, visual is good, and the battle interface is sooooo much better. I can't stand the old battle interface in the previous games and usually just let the cpu decide the outcome for me.
oh, and elephants rule.

-Graphics are excellent and run well even on low-end machines. My Ti4200 and 512 MB or PC3200 RAM can handle high detail settings and 4x Antialiasing without too much framerate loss.
-The controls are perfect. They really seem to have nailed camera control for a 3D RTS. Within about 10 seconds I had the camera figured out never even thought about it after that. Very intuitive and very smooth.
-The music is sweet. Nothing like those war drums pounding while your cavalry charges across the battlefield to dish out the 0wnage.
-The strategic depth is still there! Morale, unit fatigue, formations, flanking, ambushing, ammo--the depth of content still amazes me. And the fact that they've made it so simple to control is even better!
Bottom line--this is going to be RTS of the year. Forget all those Starcraft-like rehashes that are coming out. Download and see for yourself!

All these silly claims of game xx being better than yy, when they are in fact completely different types of games and have different target audiences, are outright silly.

I also like the attention to historical detail - they not only have the right units, but they have them in the right places (Hannibal's skirmishers up front, the cavalry ready to flank the rear, etc.).
a brief summary of what happened in the battle of Trebia is here: http://www.rickard.karoo.net/articles/battles_trebia.html
