QuakeCon Coverage

HomeLAN Fed reports from QuakeCon, offering highlights of today's DOOM 3 mod seminar. Looks like the SDK isn't that far off (among other things it will include a sample map featuring a six wheeled buggy), and a patch for the game is on the way as well. There's also a quickie look at multiplayer in Call of Duty: United Offensive.

Looks like vehicles are, in fact, a viable possibility in the DOOM 3 engine. Wahoo!

I wonder how it will handle LARGE outdoor terrain areas... I'm thinking ET style large... should be interesting :)

I don't imagine it will handle them too gracefully since there's no such thing as "ambient" light; any light in the level will have to come from a source and shadows will be calculated as such... could get expensive if you had too many lights over too much space.

          What about a real SUN?

Yea, they could just set a sun, and all the light would come from a set angle from the skybox, thus illuminating the entire outdoors, for the most part.

Unless they removed that feature, and I can't see any reason why they would, especially since I'm quite sure I saw evidence of its existence during my trek through the Delta Labs.

have u seen the monorail level? easily renders vast open areas w/ no framerate drop..

i think doom3 would handle vast outdoor areas just fine... just because a game is designed w/ a story that takes place indoor, doesnt mean its engine cant fair equally well outdoors.

Yes, the monorail level rocked. Those outdoor areas really looked like mars. Its really too bad id didnt make more out of the outdoor areas.

It wouldve been cool in order to get to another entrance point to get to drive a special mars buggy with limited o2.

It's been brought up a lot, the game is capable of handling large outdoor areas..id simply chose not to use them because that wasn't the aim.

there is ambient light, just gotta find the correct texture under the lighting menu

its there, and lights outdoor areas pretty well.

this shot is very rough, but natural lighting IS possible in doom 3. you just need to mess around with the lighting system.
