I don't think he should bother making specific Freespace game. To me Freespace's universe/story wasn't so interesting that I'd buy a Freespace game based on the name. If Mr. Smart wants to make a space sim game I think he could practically do it as well with no license.

Anyway, he better keep the number of "OMG shoot the missiles before they hit the carrier!!1" missions to a minimum. Preferably zero.
