Bethesda To Develop Fallout 3
by Maarten Goldstein, Jul 12, 2004 1:12pm PDTWe received a press release from Bethesda Softworks, announcing that the Morrowind developer has licensed the Fallout franchise from Interplay and will develop and publish Fallout 3. The deal with Interplay allows Bethesda to make future Fallout products on PC, consoles, handhelds and other media.
"We're extremely excited about this opportunity and what it means both for Bethesda and for Fallout fans around the world," said Vlatko Andonov, president of Bethesda Softworks. "Fallout is one of the great RPG franchises. Millions of Fallout games have been sold worldwide, and fans have been eagerly awaiting the release of a Fallout 3 title. Bethesda's proven expertise in this genre, building on our experience and the tremendous success we have enjoyed with our cutting-edge Elder Scrolls series, will enable us to create the next chapter of Fallout that is worthy of the franchise." ...The press release mentions that Bethesda is also working on the next installment of The Elder Scrolls. Interplay also issued a press release, mentioning that they retain rights to an online Fallout game (and still own the intellectual property), and reiterating plans to develop a Fallout MMORPG. Update: on HomeLAN Fed you can find a mini-Q&A with Bethesda's Pete Hines about their creative control, involvement from Fallout 1 & 2 team members and a release date.

If so, that probably means it's in a different direction in some way than the old games considering alot of ex-fallout guys were obviously trying to work on FO3.
With that all in mind, what does Bethesda primarily have? The Morrowind engine. They've been developing it for years. So my conclusion is that whatever Fallout 3 is going to be, it will be within the next gen version of that engine.
Pure speculation, but these are my guesses :p

I couldn't get into Morrowind because the world was so empty. Yeah, the graphics were nice, but the music paled in comparison to Daggerfall's, and the countrysides were too unpopulated.
I hope the next Elder Scrolls game is Daggerfall 2.
Fallout 3 should be great. Who knows, maybe it'll be first-person (GASP) and just as good as the others. My guess is they'll keep the isometric perspective to avoid pissing off nerds (though I'd welcome a first-person Fallout, as long as combat panned up to a third-person viewpoint. Turn-based first-person combat stinks).

There's two ways I see them going with this, and I think both could potentially be very badass.
Scenario 1:
The game is played from First Person perspective and the combat is all in real time (ala Morrowind). I know it wouldn't be traditional Fallout, but I think it could still be pretty sweet. With some Karma physics integrated we could have mutants exploding and body parts tumbling around in realistic ways. Different, but good.
Scenario 2:
Turn-based, isometric view, strategic battles--classic Fallout style. And if they updated it to be like Silent Storm (destructible terrain, ragdoll physics, etc)...*drool*
So basically either way, *fap*fap*fap*fap*fap*fap*fap*fap*fap*fap* !!!

Don't get me wrong, I think it's really awesome. I like Morrowind; italics for emphasis. But has Bethesda seen the NMA forums? Do they know what rabid, foaming-at-the-mouth Fallout fans are like? I hope so, because damn are they in for some tough criticism. I can't think of any community more annoyingly clingy than the one that's formed around Fallout.
I guess it's probably a good business decision. I mean who's not going to buy the new Fallout? But what a weight to have on your shoulders! Every gamer in the world is going to be looking at this project with a microscope, searching for flaws and cracks in the armor.
Well anyways, best of luck Bethesda. You're gutsy if nothing else.

Of all the companies that could have taken over the job from Black Isle, I think Bethesda is one of the few I can have confidence in.
Oh man. Fallout 3 + Elder Scrolls 4. Hope they don't spread themselves too thing.

BoS reminded me of diablo, albeit being 3D. there was a shop guy, a town mayor who would give out quests, and the likes. it included character developing such as levels, and skills attained by skill points. guns swords...
now what i was saying, is this the same type of gameplay as the PC versions?
