Late Night Consoling

2
As I was able to swing by Rockstar this evening (something came up at the last minute last week) I'm running a bit late, but nonetheless I've managed to juggle a few different things here and post both this update here and my hands-on impressions of Manhunt, which did indeed impress me in its own gritty way. If you're interested in what I thought of the game, head over and take a look. Thanks to Rockstar for letting me take up some of their time this evening with my violent gaming tendencies. I also had a chance to check out Max Payne for GBA, so I'll post those impressions here tomorrow. And if you're extra specially nice, on Wednesday I'll talk about my latest reason for hating Microsoft. But that's later. Tonight you get impressions of Manhunt. Enjoy!

Zelda Disc Available w/Nintendo Power
As of this morning (at least 10:00 AM, since that's when I ordered mine), Nintendo has begun taking orders for their special Legend of Zelda bonus disc which will be sent out free to anyone who either starts a new subscription or renews an existing subscription to Nintendo Power. If you're interested, head to nintendopower.com/zelda to take advantage of the deal. It's $20 for a subscription, so you could just as easily look at it as spending $20 for the games and getting a subscription for free.
FFXII Details?
The Magic Box has posted some new details from Final Fantasy XII, which the site says come from an interview with Square's Yasumi Matsuno. Among the details is the claim that the game will ship on two DVDs (a feat not even Xenosaga needed), that there will be less of a love story than other recent FFs, that the game will resemble Vagrant Story, and that many people will be surprised by the game. Look for official details later this week, as it's due to be formally unveiled on Wednesday.
Bungie's Halo Retrospective
Bungie is celebrating the two year anniversary of Halo by posting an article at Bungie.net looking back at the development and subsequent successful release of the game. I still remember fondly the thrill that came from getting snuck into a super-secret back-room demo at E3 '99 where I saw the third person action game that was then Halo. It was crude by comparison, and was shown running on a TNT 1 card, but hot damn did it impress me (even if I was somewhat disappointed after being led to believe I was going to get to see a new Marathon). Actually, I also fondly remember being in the audience at MacWorld '99 during its official unveiling. You think you were excited the first time you saw the game? Just picture a bunch of screaming Apple fans who were convinced they were being handed the holy grail of gaming. Only to have it snatched away from them just a year and a half later (although that's finally going to be rectified when the game is released for OS X next month).
Buy a PS2, win a million bucks.
Yowza...as part of their big holiday push, Sony announced today that they will be giving one lucky gamer a million dollars. To enter, you'll need to register the serial number of a new PS2 Combo Pack at Sony's web site.
Yet Another Handheld Gaming Device?
WindowsForDevices.com has posted a first look at the Gametrac, which looks like yet another entry in the increasingly crowded handheld gaming space. As we've already got devices powered by Palm and Symbian, this one of course runs on Windows CE, and sports 3D gaming, MP3 audio playback a built-in GPS tracker and an integrated digital camera. Thanks Gizmodo for the tip. Oh, and wouldn't you know it, the device is shown with a Tomb Raider logo on it, which just proves my point that Eidos won't be happy until they've got Lara Croft on every electronic device you own.

Project Gotham Racing 2 Banned Down Under?
As if gamers in Australia weren't already getting beaten upside the head on a daily basis (sorry guys, but after Germany and China, you're one of the worst-off of the major markets worldwide), politicians are pushing to have the game's designation by the archaic Office of Film and Literature Classification revoked. Why on earth would anyone object to a freakin' racing game, you ask? Because it "sends the wrong message to young people" in its depiction of speeding and road saftety. And yes, I'm pretty sure they're serious. Thanks 1UP for the tip.

IBM in N5
In case there was any lingering doubts, IBM confirmed late last week that they will indeed be providing technology for Nintendo's next-generation home console system. For those keeping score, that means IBM is working on all three next-generation platforms, which well, you really have to admire.
Jade Empire Interview
Computer and Video Games has conducted an interview with Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk, the dueling doctors of BioWare, talking with them about Jade Empire, their post-KOTOR Xbox RPG.
SOCOM II Ranking Details
If you're scratching your head while attempting to decipher the online ranking system used by SOCOM II, some help is now available for you, care of the Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine (thanks Slashdot Games). Apparently it's based on the Chess Ranking system created by Dr. Arpad Elo.

Psychonauts Music Q&A
LucasArts fan page The International House of Mojo has conducted a Q&A with Peter McConnell, the composer of the music in such venerable games as Full Throttle and Grim Fandango, who is currently working on Tim Schaefer's latest project, the Xbox title Psychonauts. Accompanying the Q&A are some MP3 snippits from the Psychonauts soundtrack.
