Late Night Consoling

0

Since it's another slow night here at LNC, I figured I might as well kick off another discussion, since that went over well last night. Earlier this evening I was looking over my console collection, and thinking about what game typifies each one. I've always been of the theory that every system, even the weakest of them, has at least one exceptional game. The Jaguar has Tempest 2000 (or Aliens vs. Predator, if that's your preference), the Lynx has Todd's Adventures in Slime World (yes, I know it was released for the Genesis, but multiplayer over multiple connected Lynx systems beats split-screen any day), the Sega Master System has Phantasy Star...the list goes on and on. What's interesting about this, is that not only is there at least one great game per platform, but in some cases, that one game really shows what a developer with enough familiarity with the platform can accomplish. Can you imagine how things would have been different if Panzer Dragoon Saga came out as a Saturn launch title? (Probably not all that different, since it's not really a mainstream title). In the cases of those systems that have a multitude of great games, the singled out game can be one that simply captures everything you love about a system. For the SNES, my favorite game is probably either Super Street Fighter II or Super Bomberman, not because either of them is inherently better than Super Mario World, but simply because when I think of the SNES, I remember those long, long, long sessions of those games I played with friends. So my question tonight is this: what game embodies your favorite platform(s), and why?

GameCube GameCube Price Drop Official It's about time...Nintendo today made it official: starting tomorrow, the GameCube will go on sale for $99, a seriously low price for a console as young as the GameCube, and incredibly, bringing down to the exact same price as the GameBoy Advance SP. This is the price of just the console with no pack-in game, but it is pretty low nonetheless, and nearly half that of the other two systems (although to be fair, those do include pack-in games).

Note that unlike Eidos, Atari still has GameCube titles in development, including the upcoming Mission: Impossible: Operation Surma.

Console Game of the Evening: Sega Rally for the Sega Saturn. "Three cars. Four tracks. All fun. It achieved the best powerslides ever by abandoning any pretense of simulation, but the sensation of drifting around a hairpin, only to feel your tires catch on the tarmac once you hit the gas has not been matched."
