UT2004 Q&A

by Maarten Goldstein, Jul 15, 2003 10:46am PDT

UGO has posted their Q&A with CliffyB, asking the Epic Games designer about Unreal Tournament 2004 and other gaming topics. Cliff answers questions about the Onslaught mode, his favorite new weapon, what we can expect from the Assault mode and why UT2003 owners will want the 2004 edition.

  • I'm sorta looking foward to it. I love BF42 but I've always felt that its good but fucking slow (running around as infantry is a fucking chore...the game is great when you're playing with the nifty toys like the vehicles, the flak turrets, etc). A game with the vehicles and nifty stuff that BF42 had (and the cap and hold mode that BF42 did so well as it actually encourages teamplay) with a faster pace (specifically faster infantry) and less realism sounds nice to me. So I think this could be cool if done right (especially if the rebate thing for people with UT2k3 works out). It could also suck. HaloPC could also fulfill this desire I have, or some HL2 mod could.

  • RPG-style character enhancements in UT2K4 would be a neat addition. I never felt like the team you created in UT2K3 was full realized by just swapping one player for another. It would be cool to start with a selection of basic warriors, and be able to enhance their stats / look / whatever as the game progressed, as you won matches.

...Every win gives you a few experience points to toss around, like in an RPG. Nothing too indepth. The people that play UT are not looking for an RPG. But it would be neat if you could, say, alter their "jumping" or "aiming" or "speed" stats. And you could create a team of really fast players, or mix it up.
