by Maarten Goldstein, Jun 11, 2003 7:14am PDTWith the recent Euro - US Dollar rate I started ordering some stuff from Amazon.com since it's much cheaper again just like when the Dollar was pretty cheap back in 1998 (not like the Guilder was worth more but it worked out pretty well even after shipping). But of course, I get taxed by customs. Motha@#$. First I save about 18%, but then I get taxed 19% (yes, our wonderful sales tax percentage) so there is nothing much to gain. Doh. Steve take out the trash. Movie: I'm sensing something very Canadian about this place.

Ecstatica
Year - 1994
Developer - Psygnosis
Publisher - Psygnosis

Using an original and highly detailed form of character modeling and animation known as elipsoid technology, this early-90's action-adventure game arrived hot on the heels of the more well-known classic, Alone in the Dark. While sharing some similarities with Alone, Ecstatica branched out from the then-seminal survival-horror formula with a macabre sense of humor and the ability to carry only one inventory item at a time. The game puts you in the shoes of a nameless protagonist in the 10th-century town of Tirich, which is under attack from a mysterious demon. In order to save the town, you must rescue the town mage's maid, who has been placed under a trance by the evil creature. Solve puzzles, battle monsters, and explore the town at your own pace. Featuring some of the most graphic depictions of violence at the time in a computer game, Ecstatica was truly more than the Alone in the Dark twin some thought it as.
Strife
Year - 1996
Developer - Velocity
Publisher - Velocity

In 1996, PC gamers couldn't move one foot without bumping into Doom clones. Most of these were shameless rip-offs of the original masterpiece, with poor graphics, terrible controls, and weak sound; however, a few stood head-and-shoulders above the rest. Strife was one of these rare titles that managed to improve upon Doom's carnage-laden formula. In Strife, players take control of a rebel trying to overthrow "The Order" in a post-apocalyptic world. While not containing the most original of plots, Strife brought several interesting innovations to the FPS table: RPG-based subplots; true conversation branching that actually had an effect on gameplay; NPC's such as shopkeepers, peasants, and soldiers; and purchasable "upgrades" in the way of targeting computers and health boosts. Perhaps published too late for its own good (Duke Nukem 3D had just been released, and Quake was just around the corner), Strife was a massively neglected title, and one of the most unique shooters of its time.

is it the NIC or the cable? there is no light on the back of the NIC (but no connection so i dunno), but system manager says the device is working properly.
i don't see why the cable would poop out over night tho

http://members.shaw.ca/sockbot/usage.png
I got a warning email saying that my usage was above average, so I wrote this:
I am responding to let you know that I have read this email and understand your concerns that my account activity is more than the average customer. However, according to the AUP section 8, that in itself is not a problem as long as said "activity does not improperly restrict, inhibit or degrade any other customer’s use of the Services, nor represent (in the sole judgement of Shaw) an unusually large burden on the network itself". I have been and will continue take the care to make sure if I have any heavy usage, it is restricted to off peak times as to not conflict with the terms set in the AUP. If you could provide me with data on aggregate bandwidth usage on Shaw's network to determine "off peak" times, I will use that information to plan my usage accordingly. If not, I will take the period of 11pm-11am to be "off peak". I feel this is a fair compromise that will not affect the quality of service you provide to all your customers, and at the same time allow me to use the service as advertised by Shaw.
One other unrelated point I would like to bring up is the design of the site at secure.shaw.ca has issues with Gecko-based browsers. If you are not in a position to fix this issue, please forward my concern to your web design team.
I haven't sent the email yet. Should I send it or just send them a wimpy email saying I was bad and will never do it again?
