Microsoft had to do this to keep parity with PS2, but if I've read correctly, the lower PS2 price is to clear out inventory in anticpation of the newly revised model which will sell for $199.99 again. So will Microsoft bump the Xbox back up to the price point, or will they let it slide at the lower price to try to increase unit sales?

Either way, people don't decide to buy or not buy an Xbox because of $20 difference. But a $50 difference means getting an AAA game with your purchase for what used to be the price of the console alone. I would have jumped at a $149.99 price point, but $179.99 just makes me yawn.

So, given that I was gonna get an Xbox and squeeze a $50 game in there past the Wife's Radar, now I'm limited to a $20 game and the two pack-ins. So, any suggestions? From the Platinum line?

If you look at it historically, $180 is very low for a current-gen console, isn't it? Killer competition alright.

Here's an photo I took of a low-price chain's (think Best Buy) Xbox prices back when the Xbox was launched here in Sweden. Divide prices by 8 to get dollars. The prices are a bit steep after the conversion, but the dollar was stronger back then.
