Halo PC & No Co Op
by Maarten Goldstein, May 12, 2003 8:03am PDTGameSpy is offering the first Halo preview (and multiplayer preview here) and I could quote some stuff from it about the porting process and how there's improved multiplayer and all. Too bad there is this.."the only major feature from the Xbox version of Halo in danger of not making it to the PC is the cooperative mode", Gearbox says its a maybe.

I emailed them already and I suggest you do the same. I think Gearbox is good at listening to customers and they have my respect..... so far.....

Halo is a great game, but I've already beaten it 4 times. With all the other titles coming out this year, the lack of co-op will make Halo slide just that much further down my list. Doom 3, Halo 2, STALKER, Half-Life 2, Deus Ex 2… My gaming budget is only so big. The main reason for someone like me to buy Halo PC is for the multiplayer, since I’ve beaten the SP several times, but without co-op, (I consider co-op to be MP) the game just isn’t that high priority, and if I wind up waiting till Halo PC is in the bargain bin (2 years later and Halo Xbox is still going for $40) then the initial MP surge that a game sees on release will have dwindled, so I’ll probably skip the game entirely. :P

Gearbox: post Opposing Force:
- announces CS: Condition Zero, and eventually hands off the contract to Ritual.
- announced as contractor for Halo PC port (over a year after it should've been released on the PC), and fails to realize the appeal of cooperative multplayer.
Ritual: post SIN
- stays very quiet until announced as new CS:CZ developer
- releases EF2 demo, and gets positive feedback
You can tell who's going to have a good year.

There are many technical complications. See on the XBOX, Most of level was loaded into the same RAM, and people mostly stuck together, so it could read the same textures, the same geometry etc from RAM. And since You sere plugged into the same BOX it was very easy to coordinate enemy/player movements and actions.
If you rememeber, HALO did NOT include co-op over a LAN. It had co-op with only 1 Xbox (computer) involved. And creating internet co-op would be similar to implementing XBOX LAN co-op. So for all you people saying "its already in there! just port it!", just remember its never that simple.

If you're going to play Halo co-op, do it with a buddy on the Xbox sitting on your couch. I personally have no desire to play co-op over the internet w/ lag, when I can play the *EXACT SAME* game on my Xbox with a buddy, smacking him when he screws up.
And it isn't just as easy as "porting over" the co-op. They redid the loading structure, and made their own netcode from scratch. Gearbox isn't lying to us by saying it'd take 3 coders a year to implement it properly... thats what they estimate it would take. They realize that co-op was a huge selling point for Halo Xbox, AND they know that it'll make all the jaded gamers at places like Shacknews upset. Fact is, though, that it'd take too much time to implement.
HaloPC is for either those hardcore gamers that can't get their fill of multiplayer Halo on Xbox, or for the entirely n00bish gamer that has yet to play through Halo.
Ignore me... I guess I'm a jaded reader of jaded-gamer Shacknews comments. *grumble*

Gearbox: If it really isn't possible to do internet play, just make it playable on a LAN. That's all I need.
