Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory Test Released
by Maarten Goldstein, Apr 23, 2003 8:13pm PDTAs promised, Activision has released the single map test of Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, the upcoming free, stand-alone Wolfenstein game that does not require Return to Castle Wolfenstein. For the Linux guys, here is your version.
This is a TEST and players may find compatibility and performance issues that will be addressed before the final release. The purpose of this test is to report these issues so that we can address them prior to the release of the game. Players should also understand that the system requirements listed below are very close to what we expect in the release version. You can help us out by reporting any problems you experience with the Multiplayer TEST to us. So, if you have any questions, comments, or find bugs, please e-mail etbugs@idsoftware.com or visit us at http://www.castlewolfenstein.com.

is there a dedicated server for this test? If there is, I'd put up a dedicated server in a heartbeat... heh...

There is no catch to it being free. The final version of Enemy Territory will also be free and stand alone. Completely free, no strings attached. There's no spyware, there's no collection of email addresses, we do not ask you to do us any "favors" and "get rid of a problem" for us in the future. The multiplayer was a labor of love for Splash Damage, id, and Activision, and it would just be a shame for all of that to go to waste. So you're getting a free game. No one believes us when we tell them this, and I can understand them. But it's true. :)
Second, people seem to be having problems identifying team mates. There are two ways you can do this:
- When you mouse over a team mate, you'll see their rank, name, and their health bar. You won't see anything when you mouse over an enemy.
- The Axis and Allies have very different uniforms. The Allies have American tan utilities, while the Axis are wearing black coats or uniforms with red armbands (on all of them, I think).
Quick tips:
- There's a player guide that came with ET -- check it out for some info.
- The voiceovers will often tell you what objective your team needs to accomplish at that moment.
- The basic idea of the map is this: the Allies have to get the tank through the tunnel doors, then to the base (where it'll destroy the depot doors), then around the side of the base where it'll destroy the corner of the depot (allowing a second route in), and then finally dynamite the fuel dump. The Axis have to prevent this, and they have some command posts they can build and MGs in their base to help defend.
- Engineers can plant land mines. They are very fun. :)
- Covert Ops' can find planted land mines from the other team - use your binocs to scan.
There's a lot more but maybe that will help people.

I didn't enjoy it as much as Battlefield, or even the original RtCW test. I could play MP_Beach all night and love it, but the map in the test was kind of boring even after the first go. It's more than that, though. It just doesn't seem like it's balanced to keep the various weapons fun anymore. Like, the flamethrower is totally USELESS in wide-open areas and the powerful weapons like the mortar and the MGs aren't worth it because you'll just get mowed down by the default thompsons that every class gets before you even know where your enemy is or can get out of his fire.
In RtCW you could do your own thing, or just hop on a server and figure out what you needed to do. I think ET's trying to be like Battlefield by making it a large map with objectives that you need to complete along the way and defensive areas that you need to capture. But at least in the first map, it's much too linear to accomodate different styles of play. Hopefully, most of these problems speak only of the style of map that was used in the test and it'll be a little more open ended when it's actually released.
There were a LOT of bugs and problems with features that I found and mailed Activision about. I'm not going to list all the problems, instead I'll talk about some of the things that it has going for it.
Teamplay is actually much more important in Enemy Territory than in RtCW, because, as noted above, players who try to go lone wolf (no pun intended) will get gunned down whenever an enemy gets the drop on them, which unfortunatly, is something that happens over and over in this map since it's strictly linear with one team defending. So, to work together better, you do best to follow the leader. The experience point system includes player "ranks" that show you who nearby is the strongest link in your team and it should be up to that strongest link to lead the rest of the team. Communication between teammates in ET is now an essential part of the game and team tactics are graded during the match. Having a strong leader and following his or her plan is the best way to do win and the best way to get the most out of ET.
Also, because ET is a bit more fastpaced than Battlefield in terms of the action, you have to expect your own battle tactics to change on the fly. Covert ops characters can loot enemy bodies and use their uniforms as a disguise to sneak through their front lines, but did you know that all players can loot dead bodies for their weapon, too? Hitting the action key while aiming at a dead ally or enemy's dropped weapon will swap it with yours, giving you a chance to steal a more powerful weapon even if your team is over it's limit, or to get rid of a weapon that isn't effective in the current combat situation.
Remember, this is only a test so don't be overly critical. If there's something you don't like or something that doesn't work, don't get pissed off and stop playing, send Activision an email with your opinion and maybe it'll make for a more enjoyable experience once the game and it's features have been finalized and released. See you all on the servers!

Wouldn't it be better to release a test demo with NO known bugs, so the users can find the ones you couldn't?

That jpg is ~122KB. The png was ~500. The gif was ~200 and looked like outdated, dithered 8 bit ass.
We need "tweak options" for the png format.
I use this: http://www.irfanview.com/
http://www.shackspace.com/~slimjim@shackmail.com/options.png
Compression level 9 makes the png screenshot ~490 KB. Level 0 makes it 2.25 megs!

So what's the catch? I can't imagine they're making a full game out of the kindness of their hearts.

Seemed pretty fun overall, though FPSes never hold my attention more than a few days.
The best part was downloading it, tweaking it, and giving it the "once over". Playing it online? Meh! Too much "work" and "effort". You'd have to pay me atleast minimum wage by the hour for me to spend my time/effort/energy "playing" this. These games used to somehow be "fun". Now they are just "work". I don't have the desire/will/energy/motivation anymore.

Highpoints for me:
-The moving tank that you can fire with as an objective. It's hella fun to shoot it with the panzerfaust ;).
-Overall awesome objectives
-The mortar is well implemented and is gonna be a lot of fun if you have someone FOing for you
-XP system is really, really cool
-Maintains a lot of the fun that the old RTCW had
in case you dunno what to do on allies, you use engineers to build a bridge, then the tank blows shit up, on the way you take another spawn and build turrents..finally the tank blows the hell out of the front door and side of the enemy base where an engineer goes in and blows up the gates and finally the big fuel pump

That is the best download system. Worldwide mirrors and every ISP has a copy on their servers.
More companies should take advantage of the power of Usenet. I hope HL2/DOOM3/DNF demo's are posted on Usenet by the publishers/game companies as the initial download site.
