In Planetside the game never ends, you capture buildings...which is cool, but thats ALL you do. But no matter what you capture, you can never 'win'. You can have a half-hour (or more) long fight to capture a building, but like all human beings, you gotta sleep sometime. After all your hardwork, a nightowl (person who stays up till 4am or whatever) can just walk into your undefended building and steal it no problem.
The problem is, I get the feeling of "why bother fighting for this building? Its just going to switch hands by the next time I log in." All you do is level a character so you can capture buildings that you will never keep. There is no real goal, no quests to do, and pretty much no story. And dont even get me started on the dickheads who camp the spawning tubes...
I never got into the whole clan thing as playing on a regular defined basis (with practices this night, games this night, etc.) just isn't me. I'm totally a team player when I do play but just not into having a regular playing schedule.
Would that be a problem with Planetside? Can you just jump in and help out where needed?

in the end it'll prolly come down to if shackers play or not
the game seems to have great potential, get rid of some lag and it would be even more fun
though I'd like to see more incentive to advance, and some way to get points for defending other than just with kills
if the skill trees were deeper and more distinct I think it would be a better game
like say you want to be AV
you start as a green recruit with a pistol and single shot rifle
first you get your assault cert, learn the basics and pick up a machine gun
then you get your RL cert, just a single shot dumbfire rocket
then an advanced AV, maybe a 3 shot trackign one (like the existing TR RL)
then you become an expert and pick up a fire and forget one, something that locks on and you don't have to keep the target painted
maybe for vehicles you need to say get mosquito then reiver, then galaxy
same with ground vehicles (buggy, that monster truck thing, sunder)
same with tanks
there need to be more pre-requisites for certs, make it so people are way more specialized and encourage teamwork
maybe get bonus points for attackers you kill after they start a hack, with a small bonus if you counter-hack sucessfully

Such a vast majority of MMO games come out so soon after a beta period that is so horribly fucked up it unimaginable. Like pre-alpha quality. Example: Anarchy Online. Something tells me this game is going to have similarly rough start even though I do see alot of promise in it (although the weapon models from the screenshots look like blobs of dog shit skinned in ms paint)

I honestly hated it at first, hated it with a passion. The random aiming system is so unlike other games, the armor system is a joke (armor piercing bullets my ass, they do not work), so basically anyone can get a MAX suit and just own everyone else on the ground, until they come with a tank. I can understand certifications for say, larger armor and vehicles, but for weapons? This really kills the gameplay balance. I thought this was an FPS, not an RPG. Also, not getting any points for DEFENDING a base does contribute to base hopping.
On the other hand, if you stick with the game for about 3 or 4 days, you start to get certifications and can actually learn shit. Jump in some squads in Galaxy drops at your sanctuary - that instant action crap gets you nowhere. Once you get some decent stats on your character, then the game can actually be fun doing assaults, etc. But its rare that you find a good assault because of the above - NO points for defense.
Oh yeah, my overall biggest complaint - I think the stealth suit should have more certifications to aquire - 2 points and you got it, kinda a joke.
I am at the "this game is kinda cool, but not ultra impressive" stage, and I am hoping it will hold out for a little while. If the developers do not do shit about defensive points, this game will get entirely repetitive quickly. I spend more time walking from base to base then actually fighting and hacking a base.

Seriously, what does this game offer that BF1942 doesn't offer? Last time an MMOFPS was released, it fell flat on its face, and the first patch was over 70 MB.

The players are too small and the game caters big time to unskilled players, hence the huge recoil, slow player movement, etc...
I can understand why catter to the masses for $$$ reasons but it was a killer for me.
And for a FPS, wth is with the gazillion keys to be able to take in the game fully?
Not for me :(

For one thing, they need to restructure the gameplay that revolves around capping a base and then leaving it to go cap another one. I think most beta players can agree that this is a serious flaw since with this system, you're just out to get XP and it makes no difference if you have a certain base or not.
Also, with the certification points system, after a while anyone can become a jack of all trades, which kind of makes classes a moot point, since you can provide your own air support as a plane driver, hop in the base, kill everyone with the weapons you bought with other certifications, and hack the base with your hacker certifications that you also have. What's the point in specializing if everyone can do everything? Don't get me started on hacking. That's such a joke.
This post seems pretty negative, but I have enjoyed the beta, and I will continue for the next few weeks. It's just that I expected them to add some content and make it more goal-oriented. Right now, it's akin to musical chairs.
then again, it is almost month away :/
