Late Night Consoling
by jason bergman, Jan 27, 2003 8:30pm PSTThanks to the wonderful phenomenon known as post-holiday sales, I am now the proud owner of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Metroid Fusion and the Phantasy Star Collection, all for GBA. But now I'm faced with an interesting dillemma...do I play them now, or wait for either the Game Boy Advance SP? I've pretty much decided not to import one, since I like to think I can wait an extra month, but whether or not I'm man enough to wait that long to try out any of these games is a whole other story. Of course, helping me wait will be the enormous stack of unplayed games I've got here, and at the same time as the Japanese SP comes out I should be getting my copy of Capcom vs. SNK 2, which will likely take up a great deal of my time. So what are all of you doing? Importing? Waiting? Not bothering at all?
| Robotech Online! Along with their confirmation that Star Trek: Shattered Universe will be coming out for PS2, TDK Mediactive confirmed that they are working on a new Robotech game, which will feature online head-to-head action. Platforms or any kind of specifics aren't available yet, but hopefully we'll know more by E3. | |
| Unity Formally Announced It was already basically revealed last week, Jeff Minter and Peter Molyneux formally announced today Unity, their "fabulous journey through a succession of beautiful abstract 3D spaces." | |
| Metroid Movie Info Gamers.com has posted some more details on that Metroid movie which is currently in development. I can't say I really care one way or another with this one...let's just hope it fares better than Nintendo's other game adaptation, the reprehensible Super Mario Bros. | |
| Silent Hill 3 Preview GameSpot has a new preview of Silent Hill 3 online tonight, based on their hands-on impressions of a "small demo version" of the game. There's also a video preview, which is uncharacteristically available for non-subscribers. | |
| Alias Game Coming Acclaim announced today that they have acquired the rights to produce a game based on the television show Alias. With any luck this will be slightly less confusing than the labrinthine plot from the series. | |
| More Acclaim Like a character out of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Acclaim continues to assure us that they're not dead yet. Need proof? Here's a look at XGRA, the next game in the Extreme-G series and here's a look at I, Gladiator, an upcoming cross platform action game set in the ancient Roman empire. | |
| Ikaruga Confirmed (Again) For like the third time in a month, it's been confirmed that the GameCube port of Ikaruga is coming out in the US. What makes this noteworthy this time around is that there's a timeframe: it will be out here in April. | |
| Dead or Alive Gaiden Assuming the game ever gets finished (remember when this was a PS2 launch title? Hah!), it's been confirmed that characters from Dead or Alive will appear in Ninja Gaiden. | |
| Hands-on F-Zero, VF:Evolution Those lucky guys from IGN attended the World Hobby Fair this weekend, and so they have posted hands-on impressions of F-Zero. Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution and Sonic Adventure DX. There are also some new gameplay movies from F-Zero, but sadly they're for subscribers only (I only mention them because they're awesome...if you can see them). Update: look like the whole lot is for subscribers-only. Blame IGN. | |
| Misc. Screenshots A new shot from Halo 2 was posted over at Bungie's official fan page, while GameSpot has new shots from Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness and Capcom's P.N. 03. |
Anarchy Reigns finished, delayed by Sega anyway

Yet we don't know a thing about it. I'm nervous about Shiny making this game. Their development of Messiah was continually pushed back and when it was finally released they were more proud of the technology of the game than the game itself (rightly so.)
I hope they're not spending too much time fiddling with technology and I hope this game doesn't end up like most crappy licensed games.
MY ideal game would be to employ a mission style layout like GTA:VC with an alive and open city. Getting persued by Agents? Better call for an exit and haul ass. Need to storm a goverment complex? Better load the Construct and get guns, lots of guns.
I'm really getting tired of "levels" with a linear track. Let me go where I want.

But the speed, ROFL.
You can see the 2 players action and even if the screen is split, its always GOD DAMN FAST.

I am in favor of this (it would take balls): make the movie tongue-in-cheek super-accurate to the videogame. That means use a version of the original music, use the flips, use the MORPH BALL, everything. The only thing is, these things would have to be somewhat funny because there is NO WAY an audience could watch all that with a straight face (so they better be laughing WITH you).

That's kinda cool, but why can't they make it based on Macross instead of Robotech?
(assuming it's about the Macross Saga of Robotech)

DOAX goes down (relatively) well in Japan
"With an initial shipment of 122,000 copies in Japan, Tecmo's beach babe game sold a reported 73,000 copies in the first day"

just thought id drop in and see how you are all doing and get to know you a little better. its like there is a cold dark gap between us, you know..pc vs console and all. you know, i used to play on consoles..like the NES/SNES/sega genisis/playstation. they were pretty cool, the game i spent the most time on was probably that mario gokart game for the SNES..it pissed me off alot and i slammed the controller about 40 times and got in trouble with my mom for cursing. then i discovered the pc & quake/2 and got hooked and stuff. never really did get back into consoles.
i used to hate you guys alot, you know..since you took halo away from us. but i cant blame you, MS is to blame for that crap..they buy anyone out. shit, they would rather buy the competition out than pay a bunch of kidnappers 100million for the return of their own mothers. dont get me wrong, the xbox is great. but ms can go suck on a buch of cocks straight from kfc. kfc has good chicken, but not as good as popeyes..popeyes makes awesome chicken. do you like popeyes chicken? its great
well im going to go back to evening reading, goodnight sexies
omg xbox is huge!!!

FFX on the other hand, is covered everywhere you look, has gotten great sales, everyone has played it, blah blah blah. So you ask someone what they think of it, and that's probably going to be tainted with a bit of resentment, what with cool games going unnoticed and everyone paying attention to these multi-million dollar corporate bohemoths...
"FFX? Sure, I played it. So did my goddamn grandma. It was pretty good, sure looked nice... but personally I prefer FF7. Oh, and by the way, ICO fucking rocks."
(p.s., that was my straight answer to your question... My personal feelings on FFX -- because I know you care a lot -- is that FFX *was* too linear, and it *was* just like watching a goddamn movie. I don't like being totally strung along by the nose for an entire game. That's fun for some games and genres some of the time, but not for 40-60 hours of supposed "RPG".)

The mentality seems to be if a game appeals too much to the main stream the hardcore players must attack it. I’m not saying or asking if FF is better then ICO, I’m just shocked to see more comments about ICO (a game that I don’t think a lot of people have had to great opportunity to experience) over a game like FFX.
Is this the secret place where the few cult players live or due you don’t like to be associated with anything popular?

Oh come on Jason... Alias has a lot of plot twists, but it's not exactly high literature. "Labrinthine plot"? Oy...
And yeah #5, I love the show, but a game? Ugh... Please just let it be.

It's gonna hurt my eyes playing that game at night though... everything is so goddamn white! :P
