CS: Condition Zero Preview
by Steve Gibson, Dec 30, 2002 1:53pm PSTAs I mentioned the other week, I had a little visit to Ritual Entertainment recently to have a look at the latest incarnation of Counter-Strike: Condition Zero as it's now being developed there in downtown Dallas. A new direction has been taken with the project along with the new developer leaving behind the 'challenges' system similar to Tony Hawk that Gearbox went with for a bit more traditional missions system. It goes like this:
Condition Zero is now comprised of a set of various unconnected missions where you play a part of a Counter-Terrorist team. How these missions and environments will be presented to you will vary between scenarios and locations. Some will include the lead in with cinematics such as you are flying in on a helicopter and you get a briefing from your commander on board. Other situations you will just be thrown right in to the middle of a scenario and be given vague details of what is going on and a limited time to escape or complete whatever else your objective may be. An example scenario as described by Erik Johnson ... [snip]If you're feeling nostalgic, here's the old preview from back when Gearbox was working on the title.

The engine is so old and out dated, the graphics and other technology is so poor by modern standards.
Counter Strike is one of the most incredible online games of all time, and is till play it (that and a little Tribes 2 sometimes) but i cant see how they could market this kind of old technology. The only reason why people could buy this is too support the CS community, but thats taking something away from time being put into the original mod. The whole thing just doesnt make sense to me

The A.I. system, which honestly be a big part of just how fun this game will be I really didn't get a long and hard enough look at to pass any kind of fair evaluation on.
Uhhh....huh? =)

the half life engine is friggin old now, sure the player textures are high res but everything else looks like ass..
yea yea, graphics don't matter for multiplayer games so you can get those high framerates, but this is single player.. it's supposed to look good.
also after playing AA the cs gameplay feels very stale too.
it still seems a ways off for release, maybe if it came out a year ago i would have played it, but after switching hands thrice all i can think of is "damaged goods" =(

good writeup though :)
