James Bond: Nightfire Demo
by Steve Gibson, Oct 25, 2002 4:30am PDT(Carried over from last night) Well, it looks like a pleasant surprise for the late nighters tonight. The 007 Nightfire demo from Gearbox Software published by Electronic Arts has made its way online a little early! You can of course grab the demo from Fileshack although considering we're one of the first out the gate with this demo the wait times may bite ya in the ass. Sadly bandwidth isnt free.
Demo players will be able to play the Japanese Estate level, which finds Bond trying to defend the turncoat Mayhew from the evil Raphael Drake's Japanese henchmen. The official NightFire website, located at http://www.007.ea.com , gives Bond fans an opportunity to receive more information about James Bond 007: NightFire prior to its ship date. Mission updates on the site include concept art, objectives, screenshots, and video clips. The site also contains images and descriptions of key characters and weapons as well as the Aston Martin Vanquish. The Q Lab section will launch shortly, featuring all the in-game gadgets as well as behind-the-scenes information, additional characters, and possibly game hints. [ download demo ] [ view screenshots ] [ view footage ]Many thanks to Mr EvilAvatar in his assistance getting this demo to Fileshack.

Here are a few bugs:
-Get stuck often between objects.
-cant seem to get out of the second pond you encounter
-the baddies that hide behind the walls/posts and then pop out at you dont even look at you when they are aiming at you. the bullets just seem to find their way to you.
-the ammo counter sometimes works
-they put in Pierce Brosnan instead of Sean Connory

I am a major Bond fan. I love all of the movies. I hate this game.
I feel that after downloading and playing this game, I have been somehow damaged both physically and mentally. Why you ask? Read on....
Let me give you a step by step account of how my day went.
1. I woke up this morning to see a 007 game demo that can be downloaded. I cheer!
2. I install the game. I am excited!
3. I run the game. I cry!
4. I picked up my gun that was so convieniently laying next to my computer.
5. I think about sucking on the barrel like Mel Gibson in Lethal Weapon.
6. After hours and hours of contemplating I put the gun down with only one conclusion.....
Reformat my hard drive!
Thanks EA! You made me realize how precious life really is and how bad you can fuck up a game.
P.S. No hard feelings. I loved Medal of Honor.

I couldn't move around the room without creating nauseating HOM effects. I exited the game, and uninstalled. Self-abuse session ended.

"Last night I went to Funcoland just to see what new games for Gamecube came out, because Gamecube is starting to have alot of games that I didn't know was coming out, but you know how they have all the platforms out on display so you can play them, well I went to the Gamecube of course, and Nintendo everytime they have several new games coming out, releases a demo disk with playable demos, and movies to watch of the game. Well this time they had one with Nightfire on it, and other games including Resident Evil 0, and Metriod Prime. But Bond is the one that REALLY caught my eye. On Gamecube it looks so realistic, almost up there with Resident Evil as far as graphics go, the girls look better than last, the guns look great, the levels look great also. Of course I expected Resident Evil 0 to look as good as it did, just from the last one. But Nightfire I think will be the best Bond game to date. "

EA knows what their doing. The real money is in the consoles.
You don't have to worry about compatibility issues with consoles, so you save significant time on QA, as well as precious development time. You don't have to pay a console game developer a retainer so that they can patch a game once its gone gold - when its on the consoles, its finished. Period. End of list. You also don't have to worry about losing nearly as much money to game piracy. People rent and buy console games because they simply don't have the option to warez them.
Well... actually, yeah they do, but its so complicated and the whole point of console gaming is simplicity. Pop in the CD/DVD and go, man!
It's unfortunate that it has to happen like this, and It's not that I support EA's current business strategy, but when you look at it from a legitimate business standpoint, it makes a lot more sense - and a lot more money - for them to do what they're doing now.

My complaints about Nightfire demo:
The guns don't feel responsive in this game. They look nice, but feel like Unreal 1 weapons, like shooting nerf guns at mannequins.
The enemy AI is weak - they just stand there as I blast their buddies 2 feet away from them.
Bugs galore. Can't get off of ladders, the sniper rifle resets my sensitivity, etc..
The art and animation look rough and un-interesting.
The menus are a joke - un-interesting, un-inspiring, un-anything. I think this menu was converted from Wolf-3d on the 286.
The rendering is FULL of tearing - a swapinterval option is a must, since the refresh rate option didn't seem to do anything useful.
The music is pathetic. Overproduced crap typical of these horrid EA games.
NOTHING new to offer in terms of gameplay. Wow, walk around, shoot, crappy FMV cineamtic, attempt to interact with the world, fail at interacting with the world, walk around more, shoot AI that doesn't respond, another crappy FMV, walk around, jump in the water, can't get out, listen to some guy leading me around with a horrible 8khz sound sample, get stuck in rotating door, quit to desktop, play solitaire.
Level loads really suck. Isn’t this the half-life engine? Aren’t level loads supposed to be fast and almost un-noticeable? In this demo, the level load takes me out of the game, fading out, showing me some horrible 320x240 desktop picture, and then I’m back in the game, forgetting what I was doing.
Pathetic rewards. What ever happened to innuendo and witty rewards when it comes to getting the girl? I save the bathhouse chick and am rewarded to a cliché pathetic cinematic, no imagination, no innuendo or interesting presentation. Lack of imagination on the part of the developer (or the publisher, since I’m sure EA has Gearbox’s nuts in their hands)
Bottom line, let EA continue publishing FPS games and we might as well stop buying them. They didn’t seem to learn anything from MOH. I don’t think the executives at EA would know a fun game if it came up and bit them in the ass.
