Late Night Consoling

So Nintendo today at long last confirmed what we've all known for some time now...that they have sold their 49% stake in Rare to Microsoft. This article at CNN/Money digs a bit deeper, and reports that Rare walks away with the full rights to Perfect Dark, Conker's Bad Fur Day and Banjo/Kazooie (for the record, I also know they've taken Kameo: Elements of Power). So now everyone's eyes are on Rare...an Xbox port of Kameo is a given, but beyond that, who knows how long it'll be before we see their first games for Microsoft? A sequel to Perfect Dark may have been underway for some time now, so hopefully whatever work was done there will be shifted immediately to the new platform. But totally new projects could be a few years off, meaning it may be some time before Microsoft's huge investment in the developer pays off for them. We can only wait and see.

PS2 Xbox Get Broadband, Get a Console Far be it from me to devote part of this post to a Shacknews sponsor, but this deal really is worth mentioning...Speakeasy has announced a new offer where if you sign up for their gamer's broadband service within the next ten days, they'll throw in a free Xbox or PlayStation 2. If you've read these posts for a while now but never thought about getting a console of your own, take a look at this deal...it might change your mind.
GameCube PS2 Xbox GameBoy Advance TGS Roundup I'll mention a few of the major individual stories below, but for new screenshots, media and impressions of all the stuff showcased at the Tokyo Game Show, head over to IGN and GameSpot, as they have far too much to mention here.
Xbox New Dead or Alive Announced While it wasn't on display, Tecmo announced today Dead or Alive Code: Cronos, the working title for the next game in their...well endowed fighting series.
GameCube Official Metroid Site Live Nintendo has launched their official Metroid Prime site, which is pretty bare bones at the moment, but it does feature a new trailer from the game in QuickTime format.
PS2 New Virtual On Announced At TGS Sega announced Virtual On Marz, the latest game in the Virtual On series. The game is to be a PS2 exclusive, and is being developed by Hitmaker, the creators of the series (and Crazy Taxi). Here are some screenshots, care of GameSpot. It's unknown if a special controller will be made, or if you'll have to stick with the Dual Shock 2 (which shouldn't be too bad, actually).
PS2 Xbox More TGS Announcements Some other games announced at TGS: a new Dance Dance Revolution (which will be formally unveiled next week), a game based on Kurosawa's Seven Samurai, and N.U.D.E., an artificial life game for the Xbox from Sega and the creator of Sakura Taisen (check out the nutty images).
GameCube PS2 GameBoy Advance Square at TGS It looks like Final Fantasy XII was a no-show at TGS, but Square was showing off Final Fantasy Tactics (details at IGN) and Unlimited SaGa ("confused impressions" at IGN) and they also announced a partnership with NVIDIA for the PC version of Final Fantasy XI. Another big-name no-show was Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicle, the FF game for the GameCube.
Xbox Steel Battalion Release Info Capcom has finally announced info for the North American release of Steel Battalion. The game will be released in November, and will cost...$199. While that's slightly cheaper than was originally rumored, it's still a bit beyond my reach.
PS2 Breaker Revealed...or not Tecmo released the logo and a single screenshot from Breaker, their new online action title for PS2. Beyond that, there was absolutely no details of any kind.
PS2 Xbox GameBoy Advance New Official Sites Konami has launched their official site for Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance, while Activision has opened up their official site for DOOM II for GBA, and Sega has gone live with their new Japanese Phantasy Star Online Xbox site.
Console Game of the Evening: DOOM for GBA. A bit on the flawed side, but still a solid port, and a great way to spend a plane ride.
