Late Night Consoling

Well this shouldn't come as any surprise...PS2 online gamers have learned what all online gamers have known for years: cheaters suck. No matter how well-planned a network, cheating will always be an issue with online games, and console systems won't be any different in this regard. If anything, it might be harder for PS2 developers to combat cheating, since any and all anti-cheat measures have to be implemented on the server side. Microsoft's closed-network system and hard drive will probably do a good job at deterring the first batch of cheaters, but it's only a matter of time before they creep into that network as well. Cheating is a plague on multiplayer gaming, and it's sad that this is the case, but there simply is no way to create a 100% cheat-proof system. Or if there is, nobody's found it yet. Still, I wish Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony (and their respective developers) luck in their struggle.

GameCube Xbox Nintendo Officially Ends Partnership with Rare Nintendo has confirmed what we've all already known for some time now (even before the Microsoft chatter started up): they have ended their exclusive partnership with Rare, and Star Fox Adventures, which ships later this month, will be the last GameCube-exclusive from the developer. An official announcement about Rare's future is expected right after SFA ships.
Xbox Panzer Dragoon Orta Delayed Sega announced today that Panzer Dragoon Orta, the long-awaited return of the Panzer Dragoon series, has been pushed back into 2003. I wasn't thrilled with what I saw at E3, so if it makes the game better, I applaud the decision.
GameCube PS2 Xbox Namco's FPS? Ever wondered what the developer of Tekken would do with the FPS genre? No? Me neither. But we may all find out, as Computer and Video Games is reporting that Namco is doing just that. No platform has been named as of yet.
GameCube PS2 Xbox Robotech: Battlecry Gold As noted in this story at GameSpot, the PS2 and Xbox versions of Robotech: Battlecry have gone gold and will be in stores later this month. The GameCube port will be out in October.
GameCube GameCube Zelda Japanese Release Date The game may not have an official title yet, but Nintendo has announced that their new GameCube Legend of Zelda will be released on December 13th in Japan, and in February 2003 in the US.
Xbox Brute Force Delayed Microsoft has announced that Brute Force has been pushed back into early next year. What, you thought Digital Anvil would ship a game on time? I kid, I kid. But until Freelancer ships, they're an easy target for jokes like that.
Xbox True Fantasy Live Online Revealed True Fantasy Live Online is the incredibly dorky name of the cel-shaded MMORPG for the Xbox by Dark Cloud developers Level-5. More will be released at TGS, but until then preliminary details and the first screenshots are up at Gamers.com.
GameCube Phantasy Star Online I & II Preview GameSpot has posted a new hands-on look at the import version of Phantasy Star Online I & II for the GameCube.
GameCube Miyamoto Speaks Games Are Fun has a news item up summarizing a recent interview with uberdesigner Shigeru Miyamoto. Among other things, he says Nintendo really is serious about online gaming (I'll believe that when I see it).
Console Game of the Evening: Phantasy Star Online for the Dreamcast. Personally I would have been much happier with a single-player only revival of the series, but nonetheless this did represent the first console online RPG (even if cheaters did ruin it for a lot of people).
