Shackpoll: CPU Wars
by Steve Gibson, Jun 06, 2002 11:40am PDTWith the big Comptex show going on over in some foreign place a lot of wacky hardware news and info is coming out. SerialATA looks cool! Oh and all that crazyness with AMD and Intel both showing off their newfangled chips is neeto too. So here's the poll.
Your next CPU/system upgrade: - AMD - Intel - Dont care - Dont knowPersonally If it was in the next 6months, I think I'd be leaning more towards a P4 system with DDR. But predicting anything much past that seems crazy. No real telling exactly how the next-gen stuff is gonna perform from both guys.

1) Drivers and chipsets for AMD-based systems are still more immature than for Intel. Maybe it's all VIA's fault for making it all look bad but I've had enough of this crap.
2) Heatsinks and thermal paste. FUCK THAT SHIT IN THE ASS. Never again. Give me a CPU with a nice, integrated and properly installed heatsink. A CPU which I can just slot in to the motherboard and replace easily. Where I don't have to faff about with paste and cleaning solutions. Where I don't have to almost snap the motherboard or put a screwdriver through a nearby RAM chip just trying to get the stupid heatsink bracket on. Argh.
These issues are made less if you buy a pre-built system but they can still trip you up if there are later driver or software issues or if you want to upgrade your CPU.
(BTW: I don't care about overclocking.)

P4 2.26GHz
ABIT BD7II-R mobo
512MB Corsair PC2100 DDR
80GB Seagate Barracuda 7200 RPM (2 of these, actually)
LiteOn 40X/12X/48X CDRW
ABIT GEFORCE4 128MB TI4400
ADS PYRO firewire card
ANTEC PLUS1080B case w/ 430W power supply
SB Live! 5.1
Klipsch 2.1
Viewsonic 19" E90
i'm currently running a P2 450Mhz, and it's been so long since i upgraded that i can't really salvage much off my machine anyway, so i'm just building a whole new one. suggestions are welcome!

Dual DDR intel boards in a few months (proper dual ddr support, 333 too I think) PLUS it's an intel chipset not via garbage.. :)
That's 667mhz ram bandwidth, not too shabby at all
So the new P4 cpu which runs @ 400mhz FSB or the 533FSB chip, can be overclocked to 667mhz FSB (even if she's unlocked) - plus the bonus bandwidth is faster at the same clock speed- let alone with increased speeds.
Lets assume the new CPU is around 2.8 or 3.0ghz for a 533mhz FSB.
That's a quad pumped 133
So 3000 / 133 = 22.5x multiplier
now, the new official specs from intel (yes, seriously they are looking at updating the CPU FSB in the future) is 667mhz or 166mhz fsb x 4
So 22.5 * 166 = 3750mhz or a 750mhz overclock, it's possible ... I guess - specially if the 3.0ghz cpu is one of the new .09 micron cpu's (it's not scheduled for release until later this year)
Now we could be a little more conservative with this and say the 2666.6666 mhz cpu (20x multiplier @ 133 quad pumped) ran @ 166 * 4 = 3333.333333 ghz from a 2666mhz cpu - not a bad (and theoretically possible) overclock - plus the 2666 mhz cpu will prolly be like 250$ or less (US$) later this year.
It's all looking good.

(IE it's no more than 20% slower than the latest top of the line 32bit machines released @ the time, like say a 3.0ghz P4 and an XP 2500+ ?)
I don't mind if it's 20% slower in 32bit apps, much like the ppro was slower in 16bit (at the time) as long as it's a kickass chip which is going to be good in 64bit.
I've got a Duron 1000 now (morgan / XP core) @ 1240mhz, with 384mb SDR (but hey I saved with this ECS board, no replacing ram costs!) and a GF4 ti4200 (well 4200 next week)
I figure that putting an XP 2200+ in the machine .13 Thoroughbred around say,... December for prolly 130$ US (roughly) maybe less should be the go,... should last me until June next year when I get a 64bit clawhammer*]b}r - preferably with an nforce board (for my new 5.1 speakers) and all the nice new features coming out later this year / next year (ATA 133/USB 2/Firewire/Wireless Lan/S-ATA/Dual DDR?fingers crossed) :)
Mmmmmmm 64bit machine, I'd bet half a testicle that Carmack will compile a 64bit binary for Doom 3 under XP -SE 64bit (or whatever new release of XP they make for the Hammer later this year)
That alone will be a huge factor in selling 64bit boxes.
*]b}r = fuck the first season 64bit boxes, wait for at least the first 3- 6- 9 months to pan out and see if they take off and revise the cpu's / chipsets to actually work well :)

Bizatch, thanks :) - us hardware junkies appreciate these kind of threads.
More - plz (not just them little "review ones" - proper ones like this)
P.S
I still think you should consider adding one of those filters like VE used to have, where we tick what category of news articles we see, like game reviews, hardware reviews, console news, game news, pro-gaming news, etc etc? - could be cool.
(next thread should be another video card poll - i'll give you a list of cards ;) )

My next CPU is going to be a Motorola G4 in a PowerMac with either ATI's top of the line card or the NVIDIA card.. whichever proves itself the victor what I go to buy.
But I guess mac users on this board are too small to be listed on the poll.

Got my new stuff in last night:
Asus A7V133-RAID motherboard
Athlon XP2100+ CPU (Retail packaging)
1GB of PC2700 333MHZ DDR RAM
(Using my existing stuff for the rest, Geforce4 4600ti, etc)
Put it together, and it wouldn't POST. I plug in my speaker and hear my motherboard saying "System reports CPU failed initialization" (the new ASUS error codes are verbal, not beep codes).
So, I reseat my motherboard and CPU. No dice. I try booting with ONLY the cpu in, no dice. I grab my 1.33GHZ from my old system and plug it in, same error.
So, I figure it's a bad motherboard and put my 1.33 back into my old system... And now my old system won't POST.
The new Motherboard FRIED both CPUs!!! I was so freaking PISSED I could have killed someone.
Anyway, I've shipped the 2100+ and the motherboard back to the store to be replaced, but now I'm out a computer for a week AND have no 1.33GHz CPU to cascade into one of my older systems.
Makes me want to freaking go back to Intel.

Anyone able to explain to me the benefits of Serial ATA and how much better it is?

I just ordered a P4 2.2 with a gig of DDR ram.
Honestly if I had the money, I'd go with the new P4 and the 533 Mhz bus. But come to think of it, if I had that much money, I'd go for an Athlon MP system.
As it is this will be my next system:
VIA KT333 mobo (haven't decided on which one yet, probably an ASUS, Epox, or ABIT – they all have so much extraneous crap on them nowadays like RAID, which you can usually get variations without RAID, but integrated audio? Yuck.)
Athlon XP 2100
512 PC2700 RAM
Geforce 3 TI500
Audigy
I already have the GF3, so all in all the upgrade isn't going to kill me, and hopefully that platform will run Doom 3 well once I do an incremental upgrade to a GF5 or R300 or whatever's the shiznit when D3 ships.
