Shackpoll: CPU Wars

With the big Comptex show going on over in some foreign place a lot of wacky hardware news and info is coming out. SerialATA looks cool! Oh and all that crazyness with AMD and Intel both showing off their newfangled chips is neeto too. So here's the poll.

Your next CPU/system upgrade: - AMD - Intel - Dont care - Dont know
Personally If it was in the next 6months, I think I'd be leaning more towards a P4 system with DDR. But predicting anything much past that seems crazy. No real telling exactly how the next-gen stuff is gonna perform from both guys.

  • My next box is looking to be a 64bit AMD job if the reviews go well.

(IE it's no more than 20% slower than the latest top of the line 32bit machines released @ the time, like say a 3.0ghz P4 and an XP 2500+ ?)

I don't mind if it's 20% slower in 32bit apps, much like the ppro was slower in 16bit (at the time) as long as it's a kickass chip which is going to be good in 64bit.

I've got a Duron 1000 now (morgan / XP core) @ 1240mhz, with 384mb SDR (but hey I saved with this ECS board, no replacing ram costs!) and a GF4 ti4200 (well 4200 next week)

I figure that putting an XP 2200+ in the machine .13 Thoroughbred around say,... December for prolly 130$ US (roughly) maybe less should be the go,... should last me until June next year when I get a 64bit clawhammer*]b}r - preferably with an nforce board (for my new 5.1 speakers) and all the nice new features coming out later this year / next year (ATA 133/USB 2/Firewire/Wireless Lan/S-ATA/Dual DDR?fingers crossed) :)

Mmmmmmm 64bit machine, I'd bet half a testicle that Carmack will compile a 64bit binary for Doom 3 under XP -SE 64bit (or whatever new release of XP they make for the Hammer later this year)

That alone will be a huge factor in selling 64bit boxes.

*]b}r = fuck the first season 64bit boxes, wait for at least the first 3- 6- 9 months to pan out and see if they take off and revise the cpu's / chipsets to actually work well :)

  • Steve!

Bizatch, thanks :) - us hardware junkies appreciate these kind of threads.

More - plz (not just them little "review ones" - proper ones like this)

    P.S

I still think you should consider adding one of those filters like VE used to have, where we tick what category of news articles we see, like game reviews, hardware reviews, console news, game news, pro-gaming news, etc etc? - could be cool.

(next thread should be another video card poll - i'll give you a list of cards ;) )

    Your internet buddy.
