E3 2002 Impressions
by Maarten Goldstein, May 27, 2002 9:26am PDTAs promised, here is my second E3 impressions article. It features (brief) impressions of Deus Ex 2, Splinter Cell, James Bond Nightfire, C&C Generals, Star Trek Elite Force 2, Age of Mythology, Delta Force: Black Hawk Down, SWAT: Urban Justice, XIII, DOOM 3 and Unreal 2: The Awakening. For those wondering, yes I do have a few videos that need to be posted as well however I currently have no estimate on when I'll have those up.

Case in point: here are the titles that are supposedly coming out soon or have just been released.
Soldier of fortune II
Doom III
Unreal 2
Unreal Tournament 2003
Half-Life II
Team Fortress II
No One Lives Forever II
Star Trek: Elite Force 2
Deus Ex 2
Duke Nukem Forever
And so on and so forth. I am personally looking forward to EVERY one of these games, don't get me wrong. Also, I realize it's completely posssible (and likely) that all of these games will have very original components to them, however its always more fun to play a game with a new universe, new design, etc.
Maybe it has to do with developers/studios reluctance to grant money towards unproven franchises, and this is the result.

Never really got too frightened or got into the whole pulse-pounding fear thing, maybe it's different in-booth. I definitely am hoping there's some times in the game where there's just way too many enemies coming at you at once, though balancing that with sections that looked like this video would be fine.
Overall: a little less impressive than I'd hoped, but I'm willing to believe most of that is due to the ShakyCam nature of the footage. Definitely still interested in Doom3, it looks like it will be cool.

So does that mean we need to wait for the GeForce 5, or will a GeForce 3 be sufficient? I can't imagine not wanting a GF4, unless there was something a lot better to buy.
The running demo was on ATI's latest and even that had some slowdowns once in a while.
I've heard rumors of something called the ATI R300. Is that what they were using? I havent' seen any sites covering that chipset yet... unless that's just what the latest Radeon cores are called, and I'm just stupid. In any case, that's a pretty big coup for ATI to have their card be id's hardware of choice for the demo.
