Prey Lives..Again?
by Maarten Goldstein, Mar 11, 2002 1:12pm PSTFrom the rumor department at Evil Avatar comes word that the infamous Prey project from 3D Realms is in fact still alive. Supposedly Human Head Studios (Rune) is now working on the title, using the new DOOM tech no less. The game had it's fair share of problems when it was in development at 3DR several years ago, and was cancelled. Here's a Prey FAQ from back in 1998 if you don't remember/know what this game was supposed to be all about. We couldn't get official confirmation or denial from 3D Realms.

Prey was using a portal-based engine, which meant basically that you can do insane geometry and interactivity. I mean, there was destructable terrain, radiosity lighting, photo-textures, impossible geometry (one scene in a movie shows the main character in a bathroom, then zooms out to show that it is the center of a large gyro), 3D facial animation, bones...all in 1998!
The engine was the selling point of the game and IMO was probably a great part of the gameplay and story. Using BSP in Prey is like taking away the 3D from Quake.

"Well, I like to think I'm pretty good at what I do."
We all nodded and accepted the statement matter of factly
and went back to talking about games and eating our dinners.

Ten years, and many engines later, it's no different.
Last night John sent a shockwave through the world of gaming that will be felt for years. We got a peek at Doom 3 - or at least it's engine.
Yup, he's pretty damned good as what he does all right :)

It is not a news site.
it is a a news entertainment site.
professional wrestling is technically called "sports entertainment".
Evil Avatar is to News as WWF Pro Wrestling is to Sport.
Unless there is confirmation from 3dr, the devs or id Software, I believe this is just evil avatar trying to get some attention.

"Beyond Shadow Warrior, 3D Realms gives you Prey. Prey features full 3D characters (alright, "kinda like Quake") plus the important factor that made Duke the king of shoot-'em-ups: great, great, interactivity (at least that's what I expect, won't you?) It will be out sometime in '99, and you can count on 3D Realms that it will definitely be as good as Quake, if it won't actually completely trash it...
"This situation is very similar to the last one," says George Broussard, president of 3D Realms. "We could spend time developing an intricate story for our next Duke Nukem game, but that could literally take forever, no pun intended. We realized that in order to meet the 1998 deadline, we'd need a story that was already well-tested. So we licensed id's Plot engine as well."
"We don't want to make the same mistake with Duke," adds Broussard. "Prey is eating up most of our time, so we have even less manpower to dedicate to the Duke project. However, with both the Quake 2 and Plot engines at our disposal, all we have to do is throw in pipebombs, ExplodingToplessGoGoDancersTM, etc. etc. and boom! Instant winner!"
Remember the past!!!!!
