Aliens versus Predator 2 Movie
by Maarten Goldstein, Oct 25, 2001 2:48pm PDTWe managed to obtain an exclusive new video trailer for Monolith's Aliens versus Predator 2, showing off all new footage from the full game in a movie trailer-like way. The movie runs for 1 minute and 46 seconds, and is available as a low-res (4.4mb) or high-res (9mb) Windows Media file. You can also grab a zip file of the 9mb video if you don't want the video to stream in Windows Media Player. This video is not official but we are badasses. Aliens versus Predator 2 will be in stores later this month. If you want to know what to expect, there is a multi player as well as a single player demo available.

It sucks they the second one worse. The second Aliens movie was the best. For the game, it looks like the worst.
On the other hand, if you want to be a Predator or an Alien, this version looks better. But I like being a marine and this looks worse.

To me, it looks like Monolith tried to make an action game based on the Alien and Predator franchises, whereas Rebellion went strictly for suspense. Elements of suspense, moments of dark corridor crawling while facehuggers skitter through the vents or a Predator's breath begins to click behind you...I'm all for that. But AvP got old pretty fast; you rarely got to see anything, or what you were seeing was strictly dual-tone (darkness or green-white light amp as the Marine, darkness or green-silver or red-black or blue-orange as the Predator), and by their very nature video games are (or should be) visual entertainment. The openness and color in the outdoor maps and the (gasp!) working lights in the indoor maps are going to be refreshing changes to the way the original played, IMO.
The in-engine cutscenes were pretty slick; I hope the whole stop'n'go time effect is part of them and not something edited into the video, as it was nicely done. The exploding, tumbling APC (that's what it looked like to me, anyhow) bouncing down the hill was slick. The flamethrower looked like it might not be useless. And...it had a loader that'd been converted into powered armor, which is a particular scifi-ism that I've got a weak spot for. (=
All that said, I've not played the MP demo, though I've run around the map for a bit as all three characters it includes. But then I'm not interested in AvP2 as an MP game.

Then I tried the MP demo. YE GODS, WHAT A TURD. I think it's telling that on the server I played on, 2 players were Marines, 2 were Predators, and 8 were Aliens. The Alien is way, WAY, WAY too powerful. They move much, much faster than the other two, and they can kill a full-health full-armor player in under a second with the weapons they spawn with (which are all they weapons they get, of course). And I don't know how the fuck they do it (didn't get a chance to play as Alien), but it seemed they got a hold of you, cuz once I'd taken one hit from them I could barely move, and had no chance of survival. And christ, the Predator is totally weak. His claws are nothing compared to the Alien, the little blue shooty thing is utterly useless, and the net is just silly (does it do any damage?).
With the full complement of weapons, it might not suck so much, but come on, isn't the point of a demo to make me want the game? After playing this demo I want nothing to do with it.

The irony of the Planet* site complaining about people having to make an account to access files!
But, do they not understand the word "Exclusive"?
