So supposedly AMD is going to be naming their CPUs Athlon XP now. The Register has a list of what each XP number will represent in actual Ghz.

  • That's right, it's all about the marketing. Why would a gamer/power user/whatever CARE what they call the CPU ? This is *needed* to get AMD to the masses. People want to see a number, be it MHz, or a PR style rating. 2000 sells better than 1500.
CPU clock rate is by no means an accurate measurement of speed anymore, the CPU architectures are too different (Athlon - P4). An accurate benchmark number is the way to go. Is PR accurate ? One can argue, I'll say it is. Read the reviews, the AMD 1.4 beats the P4 1.8 silly... yet it'll probably only be a XP 1600.

It's not so bad, it's good for AMD, and I am very sure you can easily read up what the true clockspeeds are, if you care to know.
