Pentium 4 2Ghz Released

Intel is officially releasing the 2Ghz Pentium 4 today, surely another milestone in processing speed. It was just over a year ago that AMD and Intel hit 1 Ghz with their processors at some $1300 per CPU, and now you can buy a 1.4Ghz AMD for just a little over $100. The 2Ghz P4 should be around $550, but is it actually worth that? There are reviews at AnandTech, HotHardware, Tech-Report, FiringSquad and HardOCP. Looks like thanks to a superior FPU still has the Athlon beating out the Pentium 4 in several FPU intensive applications, while the Pentium 4 is faster in games for the most part.

With its breakthrough clock rate and 478-pin packaging, today's Pentium 4 2.0GHz is an extremely attractive solution for the consumer with an unlimited budget, but for the rest of us, AMD continues to offer the price/performance advantage. However, Pentium 4 has certainly come a long way in this department since it was first released, as Intel moves closer each day to transitioning from Pentium III to Pentium 4.

  • I have to say the 2GHz is a nice P4, really. I use AMD because it's so much cheaper, and looking at the prices the way they are, with the TBird 1.4 @ $110, and the P4 2G @ ~$550 or something, well I can't fathom spending $400 more for equal performance just for the Intel logo.
For the VIA bashers, buy the SiS chipset, or wait for the nForce, or buy the new revision of the ALi which looks pretty good. There are more choices than VIA you know...

I am glad AMD and Intel are battling for the performance crown, it's good for all of us.
