Intel vs VIA Round 2!
by Steve Gibson, Aug 17, 2001 8:55am PDTLooks like Intel is getting more nervous about that new VIA chipset for P4's. They have taken to warning motherboard manufacturers that they will get dragged in to a "costly legal battle" if they produce boards based on the chipset. Go Intel!
"They are not licensed to sell products that are compatible with the Pentium 4," Intel spokesman Chuck Mulloy said. [snip] "Yes, they told us this was happening. Certainly the pressure is very intense right now," said Richard Brown, Via's marketing director, reached at the company's headquarters in Taipei. "But I think you'll start to see motherboards come out very soon. There are customers that we are talking to, and we're very confident you'll see our product on the market."The VIA guys say they are "comfortable" with the decision to put the chipset out on the market. Anyone wanna bet that on how many patches we'll have to download before it's stable? Took forever to get my Win2K box running smoothly with I dont know how many of those "4in1" drivers. Runs great now though. :)

I still don't understand the problems people are having. I am not the world's luckiest person, but so far my AMD/VIA based systems have been rock solid. They include:
Asus P5-AB w/k6-2/400 Win98SE
Asus A7V w/Duron 600@800 Win98SE
Asus A7V133 w/Duron 800@1000 Win2k
Asus A7V133 w/Athlon 1200@1500 Win2k
They ALL have SBLive! or Live! Value in them except the K6-2 which has a POS Aureal/Diamond jobbie, and yes, I've owned Intel systems too.

Which btw dont forget that Intel just buddy buddys with MS to get their drivers in the OS. The current 4in1s are in WinXP btw.

Pentium 4:
1.8Ghz P4 £551.08
Supermicro P4-STA Pentium 4 Motherboard RIMM £218.55
1GB Samsung ECC RDram (4x 256MB RIMMS) £512.32
£1281.95
Athlon SMP rig:
1.4Ghz Athlon (ThunderBird) £117
1.4Ghz Athlon (ThunderBird) £117
Tyan S2462NG Dual Athlon Mobo (w/o SCSI) £421.83
1GB (4x 256MB) Crucial/Micron PC2100 CAS2.5 ECC Registered £148.00
£803.83
difference £478.12(the Tbirds don't 'support' SMP, although it works :))
I'd be willing to bet the dual Athlon's would be RIGHT ON THE HEELS of the P4 in Quake3...

hell, buy Crucial ram instead of the Corsair, and get about £80 off the total cost of the Athlon box (Crucial ram is half the price of Corsair here)
