id's QuakeCon Announcements
by Maarten Goldstein, Aug 10, 2001 2:20pm PDTId software's press conference just ended, announcing two new projects there. Besides the Wolfenstein multiplayer part, id is working with Nerve Software on an "untitled" multiplayer cooperative game. It won't be massively multiplayer, but it will be an online title. Besides the fact that Activision is publishing it, there wasn't much more information on that.
And as expected, Quake 4 was announced as well and is in development at Raven. It will be using the Doom engine, and set in the Quake 2 world of Stroggos. Obviously as the Doom engine is still very much in development, the game is ways off. The focus will be on the single player experience. Also ShackES has some stuff up.

Quake 4 -> Bringing back the Strogg story is a good idea. Most of you think Quake 2 had a good single player (better then 1 or 3 at least), so it'll make you wanna play it. Matrix type effects will be awesome, yeah I agree it seems like Raven played Max Payne and said hey Quake 4 can have that, but hey same thing happened with UT and Q3 didn't it? And both games were succesful. The only bad thing is that I bet we won't see it till next Christmas or later.
New Game -> I'm glad there working on a new franchise, most of you are too. If its only a multiplayer game then it shouldn't take 2 years to complete so we might see it next year some time.
Doom 3 -> The one I'm looking forward to the most, mostly because I think from what it sounds like is gonna kick Unreal's Warefare or whatever's ass. I think I speak for everyone else by saying where the fuck is the footage?
Overall, I think since there all using Doom 3 tech they will have good graphics and technology and then with id's influence and there own design and ideas I doubt if any of these games aren't Game of the year material. Next year's E3 is gonna kick ass.

Its really simple, when you make a product and give it a name, any subsiquent products should share all the familiar elements of the first product.
Every tomb raider game had the same lead character, the same universe, the same gameplay, the same look and feel and the same plot for the most part. Thats a GOOD thing, because it lets you know what it is you're getting when you pick up the box.
The same thing with movies, when you watch a Rocky movie you know your getting a Rockey movie, not just a movie about a guy who boxes.
Id's "franchises" have nothing in common one game to the next. Quake1 and 2 and 3 had nothing in common other then gameplay type.
When joe computer gamer picks up quake 2 he is NOT getting a "quake" game he's getting a FPS with the quake name on the box.
The same can be said for doom, but at a lesser extent as we dont know what doom3 is going to be at this point, but I'm willing to bet its not going to be the same as doom1 and 2 in terms of gameplay and plot.
Unreal gets the idea of a franchise, Unreal and UT both share the same universe, character (types) gameplay and look and feel.
Yes they tweaked and updated it but UT was still and "unreal" game.
People LIKE to know what they're getting when they pick up the box. with Id, you dont know what you're getting other then its gonna be a pretty shoot-em-up.
If you picked up quake3 after really enjoying quake2 and expecting more of the same you were sorley disapointed.
bear in mind im talking about your average gamer here, and not 3r337 shack types and PC gamer subscribers.
id is just milking the quake and doom names while not doing anything to create a cohesive and persistant game world, and i think thats lame.
While I think Romero is a giant doofus, id would of been better off keeping him because I think he "gets" the concept of persistant design from game to game, and there would actually be a quake franchise and not just 4 video games called "quake".

Daaaaaaaamn. I'm assuming Quake 4 is the game they were talking about a while ago as the "undisclosed project". GG, Raven. Please don't bite off more than you can chew, though.
Funny thing is, I'm happier that Raven is doing Quake 4 then I would be if id was doing it. If id sticks to engines, and lets Raven do the game content, we have a winning combo!

The way Kyle would swing it and hack off Stormtrooper arms was too cool. Also, the Stormtroopers would run and find a better firing position if they saw you pull it out. If you only had a gun, they would stand and fight. At the end of the demo level there is a big hangar where a duel would take place with some unnamed dark jedi. This, also, was stunning. It literally looked like the duel from the end of Episode 1.
